First off I am a first time poster. I'm getting married in August and am trying to find the perfect gift for the best man. It's a toss up between a fixed or folding blade. He seen my Trailmaster San Mai III and was blown away and I'm thinking maybe Cold Steel but also looking at the SOG Creed and a few of the spyderco folders. I would appreciate any help and suggestions here.

This is my first membership to any blade forum. I have a love for the great outdoors (survivalist type stuff), fly fishing and especially photography (my second love). This rekindled knife interest simply blindsided me. Since May I have added the CS Trailmaster San Mai III and a Spyderco Sharpmaker to my Kit and it looks like i'm gonna keep adding. Too many interests and too much rambling. Thanks for having me.:D

Yeah!!!!!!!

I say thaat emphatically but I want to keep it under 150-160. Preferrably around 100-120. This guy is not as crazy as I am either so Thats my situaltion. Thanks though.

The AG Russell Field Knife is a great piece of gear for under 200 bucks.

That is a sexy knife. I'm looking into it now. Also I would like to keep the blade less than or equal to 7.5 inches. cheers

Moved from traditional (where we will start suggesting multiblades) to General where you will get a more varied response along the lines of the knives you are looking at.

Thanks Bastid. Sorry for the misplacement. Trying to navigate my way around here. Cheers

No big deal at all. It takes a little time to get the lay of the land around here.

For about $100, I'd look at one of the ESEE /RAT Blades - specifically the 4 or the 6. They are fantastic knives in this price range. For about $150-200 I'd recommend the Falkniven A1, Bark River Bravo, or Cold Steel SS Recon Scout. You can also go down a little and look at the Buck Vanguard fixed blade series as well. They offer a very decent 4" knife with Wood handles for about $75. If you like, there are also more "tactical" styled knives from the Boker Plus fixed blade series or the SOG Seal Team knives in this price range as well.

I mentioned only fixed blades, but in your price range there are tons of quality folding knives available. Just say the word, and welcome to BF by the way!

Check out Kershaw, Spyderco and Benchmade too. Especially the Benchmade 710 D2. It is right in your price range and an excellent folder.

Under 8" you might consider the Becker BK7 around $100.
CS Recon Scout is also a good one, as is the ESEE6 at a slightly higher price point.
another option would be an ESEE Izula, BK11 (Necker) or BK14 Eskabar) custom etched.

over 8": the BK9 or Kershaw Outcast.
around the $150-60 mark, the ESEE Junglas is a good deal.

oh, yeah - welcome to the forums and congrats on getting married!

I'd say Strider SMF or SNG, or a Chris Reeves Sebenza for a folder and a Strider MTL-SS or Sniper, or maybe DB-L for a fixed blade to fill out the high end.

On the medium end, you can't go wrong with a Spyderco Military or a Benchmade 950 Rift for a folder, and take your pick of the RAT/ESEE fixed blades to fill out the middle end.

If you like the guy at all, stay away from the low end.

Most of all these listed have a lot of options so you can get one uniquely suited to his tastes.

ummm... Striders, Sebenzas are out of his price point.

The 950 and Mili are good choices though as well as the RAT's (ESEE). I have an RC-4 and Izula that I can whole-heartedly recommend.

That's why I offered both. And you'll notice I addressed the concern of a lower price point too. But thanks for helping me read.

For Folding knives, i would suggest a Spyderco Military(see my avatar:D)

There are many flavors to chose from, and they are excellent knives:thumbup:

The RAT6 is looking pretty good. I was also looking at the spyderco folders (police/stretch) The military is a bit out of my range. Thanks for all the great suggestions fellas.

If he's into outdoors stuff like you are (or you just want to get him a superbly made, extremely functional knife), I'll add another vote for something from ESEE/RAT.

For some slightly flashier (but still very well-made) options, you might also take a look at some of the fixed blades by Boker Plus.

Anyone have much to say about the SOG NW Ranger? I've been also looking at the creed but it's getting a bit steep. I care for the fella but I have to get 3 other smaller spyderco folders for the other groomsmen. Uggh! thanks again

SOG generally makes good fixed blades, but their folders have been known to be problematic. Personally, I prefer Micarta over Kraton rubber (SOG) but thats me. Don't care for the Creed model.

If are looking for a "theme", here's an idea - get your BM the ESEE 6 and the groomsmen Izulas!

Or get go with a Spyderco theme and get the BM an Endura (like the FFG G10 version) and the groomsmen Delica's.

Or you could go with a BOKER theme and get the BM this knife -

and the groomsmen these knives-

We can go all day with this.

Folders seem to be much more useful in general for most people on this forum as far as I can tell. For me, it's just much more practical to carry around. I guess you're decision between a folder and a fixed blade might depend on what you would like him to do with the gift. It sounds like you'd like him to use it rather than keep it in a display case. Do you think he'd have more fun carrying around a knife everyday or would he enjoy something that he could go camping/hiking/etc with where one might not worry so much about drawing attention with a bigger fixed blade hanging from the hip?

If you're going the folder route, I highly recommend Spyderco over SOG. Spyderco is always original, known for quality, has excellent customer service and puts a great deal of research into their designs. I couldn't say all of that about SOG. Other names in that price range with quality products might be Benchmade, Kershaw, Zero Tolerance and Cold Steel.

As far as fixed blades go, great knife companies to look into are: Scrap Yard Knives, ESEE & Fallkniven.
