Does anyone have any ideas as to a good and simple compass course may be found? I studied Don Paul's "Green Beret's Compass Course" but I don't quite "get it"

Are there any videos or other books out there that explain the use of the compass better?

There is the US Army's land navigation manual. Aslo check the book, "Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills." Its front section is devoted to off-trail travel, and has a good treatment of compass navigation. Most public libraries have it, or it is failry inexpensive to buy.

Here are some excellent books on the subject:

"Finding Your Way In The Outdoors", Mooers

"The Wilderness Route Finder", Rutstrum

"Land Navigation Handbook", Kals

"Wilderness Navigation", Burns & Burns

"Compass & Map Navigator", Hodgson

"Be Expert With Map & Compass", Kjellstrom

All are fine books with the last four being of more recent vintage and pretty easy for the novice to follow and learn from.

I'll add one more book to the list:

GPS Land Navigation by Michael Ferguson. The book was published in 1997, so the section that discusses available GPS's is pretty dated, but this is the best book I've seen that covers use of maps, compasses, and GPS in combination. I highly recommend it.
