I'm thinking about buying the Spartan*blades*phrike for an edc fixed Blade I was wondering if anyone has experience with this blade

What qualities are you looking for in your EDC? What about the Phrike catches your eye over something more mainstream such as (say) an Uzula II? My impression of the Phrike is that it is essentially a combat-oriented neck knife. Granted, the blade looks reasonably useful for basic tasks, but the handle looks designed for coolness, not comfort or retention.

Spartan is supposed to make pretty good knives, but if I saw a Phrike without knowing its origin my first thought would probably be "mall ninja." Or Klingon. :D

I'm mainly looking for a self defense Blade that can also do utility tasks with a slim profile the phrike seems to fit the bill and it's a good looking knife in my opinion

Oh, don't get me wrong. I think they're cool looking myself. I think a 4½" blade is a bit large for typical everyday urban tasks, but YMMV. It would be too big for me.

I like the little bit longer Blade for self defense the smaller 3" blades don't have quite enough length to penetrate effectively

I like a much smaller knife for every day carry. I really like a good small fixed blade. The little ESEE Candiru is about perfect. In the 60+ years I have carried a knife, I have never had to rely on it for penetration.
If I were in that situation, I'd use something else. :D

I'm no expert at knife combat, but my impression from articles I've read on the topic is that most injuries from knives come from slashing rather than stabbing, so it seems likely a sub-4" blade would do that just about as well as something a bit larger. I'd also be willing to bet that, just as with the defensive use of firearms, the mere display of the weapon would be enough to deter most potential assailants. I can't see a mugger going "Oh good, he's only got a 3½" blade on that thing and I woudn't want to mess with anybody carrying anything bigger than 4 inches." My guess is most would go "Holy crap! He's got a knife!" whether it was 3" or 6".
