Hello, I'm looking to buy something $100-$140 range. I thought I was going to go with an emerson mini commander but after reading some reviews, I'm not sure now. What do you guys suggest in this price range other that an Al Mar SERE? I want something that will last and have little to no blade play.

a kershaw avalanche (much cheaper $79.00-on up), or a cuda dominator (at about $149.00).

So, just WHAT'S wrong with the AL Mar SERE (2000)???.:grumpy:...Both of my SERE 2000's will out-last me, and neither one has ANY blade-play.

There is nothing wrong with the SERE what so ever. I have had FOUR of them and loved them all. Just looking for something new...:)

Ok...You are forgiven, then.:D...But how about an Al Mar Nomad?...Or if you are looking for something a little bigger, how about a Spyderco Military, or one of the new Spyderco Chinook II?

Dennis, the bladetech has been on my mind for a while. How well do you think that will serve in a self defense mode?

NRG,
Could you give us your preference as to:

(1) blade length
(2) blade steel
(3) heavy/medium/light use
(4) scale material?

Perhaps then more suggestions may match your need.

I think the Emerson mini-commander is ok, if the QC checks out but I think a proper v-grind applied to it post-factory would really make it rock.

How about considering the Spyderco Military, Buck Mayo (excellent EDC in the sub 3.2inch range), Wegner Pro-hunter, Dominator, MT Amphibian?

I keep reverting to my Spydie Native III pe. It is, for me, a great edc user.
Tho I suspect you're lookin for something a bit more tactical.

:D I knew I would be! I'm not really feeling the Nomad, I checked it out but just not calling me. The Spyderco Mili was an option, but that too isn't grabbing me.

Spyken, Length 3.5-4
No AUS-6 or AUS-8 :)
Medium
NO ZYTEL!

There are a bunch of great folders you can buy in that price range.

Some of the more frequently mentioned large folders are:

BM AXIS AFCK (806D2)
BM 710HS
Spyderco Military
Al Mar SERE 2K
Buck/Strider collab
Camillus Dominator
Spyderco Chinook
Camillus CUDA Maxx 5.5
MT LCC
MT Amphibian

I've handled most, but not all of the above, however I think my preference would still lie with either the Military or the AFCK.

This is if you strictly adhere to that specific price range, just looking at big folders (blade length >3.5"). There are even more knives that are slightly (+/- $20) out of that price range that are equally good.

For a long while the Spyderco Wegner was my favorite carry knife. The blade shape is a very useful edc choice and would serve you well in many capacities. I've never held the new version by Blade-tech, but have read everything Dennis had to say about it and would say it was a perfect fit. The only thing I did not like about the Spyderco version was the single stainless liner and the Blade-Tech has addressed this with dual nested liners.

Ok, I have two in mind. A mini Commander or Wenger Bladetech, which one for all purpose self defense, utility and why? What are some of the problems with the Emersons?

another vote for the blade-tech: stout, practical, versatile & great small hand ergonomics

I am a Benchmade fan, but can't help but love the Microtech line as well. Pick a price point, which you have already done then pick a blade that you like.

Griptilian $50-60

705 - smaller for EDC

710 - larger, but will get it done - whatever you need done.

Microtech Mini Socom Elite - don't let the "mini" part fool you, this one will hardly be noticed in you pocket - very light and the frame lock is solid as they come.

Even though I own the Mini Socom Elite and a LCC by Microtech, my EDC is a mini Griptilian. I don't wory about a scratch and it cuts everything that will need cutting - even tougher jobs than string if it is forced into a situation. It's also street legal in my part of the world - 2.95".

Most excellent. The knife is comfortable in a variety of grips. The handle design really locks the knife in there as well. I carry one on duty as a full time LEO quite often. I am very confident in this knife.

Of THOSE two choices, I'd go with the Wegner Blade-Tech. I know Tim (Wegner) personally, and I KNOW that he would NEVER put out any junk. Everything that he designs is made to last, and it WILL hold up to "real World" use.
