Looking for a good fixed blade

Hello. New to this forum. Done some searching and got some basic questions for most of yall.

I'm looking for a good quality fixed blade knife. Something that can be kept in a boot or on my hip without it being in the way a bunch. I work construction and work on vehicles and use it on the folks farm so I need something that can take one heckuva beating (prying, slicing, cutting, hammering, screwdriver, etc.). I've been looking at the esee 3 and benchmade 147bk and 148bk. I have no use for a serrated edge. I've got a smith and wesson homeland security knife but it's a little to bulky for every day carry. Looks are semi important. I don't want a dull boring knife.

I'm sure I'm asking for a lot but I'm new to the fixed blade scene (been carrying a folding kershaw and gerber for years). Thanks for any help you can give me.

Tyler

Maybe a multitool and a good folding knife would work better for you? Maybe with a small pry bar thrown in?

To answer your question,
KaBar Mark 1. I just picked one up for camping use and I think it would make a pretty good edc. I can't really justify carrying a fixed blade knife at work. It would catch on all kinds of stuff or fall out and stab me while I was climbing through a man hole or something.

I carry a small pry bar Tyler, insanely useful.

That square knife Mel got me is WAY more useful than I expected. (Razel)

I've got a multi use tool. Couple of em. Can't stand using them.

Nick you got a link on that knife?

Something strong that doesn't get in the way huh? But not dull (by that do u mean u want something shiny and colorful?)....this is a tough one.. id recommend a bk11 or Izula since you can get custom scales or wrap it with any color cord you would like and Ive used my bk11 for every single task you described and it keeps coming back for more. But it may be too small (maybe?) for what your looking for if your in the market for an esee 3 (not by much)

Don't know if I can post links on not so I texted it to you...

I love it, but it doesn't replace a folder, I still carry one every day as well.

Only use I have for a multi tool is in a hunting vest. They may do a lot of things, but aren't real good at any of them.

The HEST would be a fitting choice.

Yeh it is I've been trying to locate one for a little while.....its near the top of my wish list....come to think of it I might just start a new web thread for it......

The Knife Connection has those HEST fixed blades, as seen in their photo above.

I'd also at least look at the Boker Cop Tool, it's pretty tough for the price.

Get a multi-tool, using a knife as a screwdriver is never a good idea. For cutting and prying check out Scrapyard knives new Scrapivore.

If money is no object, I would recommend the Busse Game Warden. One of the thin ones. It would take a little patience to find one, but they are out there. You aren't going to break a Warden. A Swamp Rat Warden or Scrapyard Scrapivore would also be good choices. Other than those, I would say Izula, all the way. Izulas are great.

I'm a huge fan of ESEEs. They're tough, and the warranty CAN NOT be beat. Not sure if the ESEE 3 would work as a boot knife for you (unless you have really big boots), but can be comfortably kept on the hip. If you get the one with the MOLLE sheath, that give you more options for carry. If you want something smaller, the Izulas would work well as boot knives.

I would also suggest searching the forums thoroughly. There are ALOT of fixed blade recomendation threads out there to give you more ideas for what will fit your needs..

...I need something that can take one heckuva beating (prying, slicing, cutting, hammering, screwdriver, etc.). ...

For the prying, hammering, and screwdriving, I highly recommend a prybar, a hammer, and a screwdriver. A knife is none of those. Its a knife. You wouldn't expect a wrench to cut things....why would you expect your knife to be a hammer?

Already mentioned, but the CRKT Razel line would be a good fit. It's a great pry/scraper, thick as hell, can take a beating, and not so expensive that you don't have to worry about abusing it. And I'll admit it - I've used a knife as a hammer or a screwdriver on several occasions. It's called "MacGuyvering"

BTW...if you are looking for a smallish, out of the way cutting tool...the Fallkniven WM1 is a phenomenal choice. It won't pry, hammer, make espresso, chill your beer, or get the Internet....but it does cut materials wery well.

I don't care about what anything was designed to do, I care about what it can do. And 9 times out of 10 I'm not within reach, not around, or the area is to small for a hammer/screwdriver/pry bar/multi tool to get into. Knives are incredibly versatile tools as I'm sure most of you know.
