Hello, I have been searching for a good folding dagger and I have yet to find the perfect one. The closest thing that I have come across is the A.G. Russell frame-lock spear point http://www.agrussell.com/ag-russell-frame-lock-spear-point/p/AGFRMhhh1T/ but I would really like a knife that has around a four inch blade and the A.G. Russell has a three inch blade.

So I basically have two questions. Number one, what do you guys think of the A.G. Russell knife and number two are there any other good folding daggers that are not liner locks I should look at. I would like to keep the price in the 250 dollar and lower range but if there are any more expensive ones that you like feel free to tell me about them also as one day when I can spend more I might track them down. Thanks for the help guys. :)

I think Darrel Ralph makes what you're looking for... I think it's called a Cuda Maxx? Camillus made a production version at one point... Otherwise, I'd look at Cold Steel's Caledonian, or one of the Lone Wolf Defenders.

I appreciate your suggestions and I had previously checked out all of them accept the caledonian. Unfortunately all of those knives are either too expensive or out of production save for the defender which has an opening mechanism that looks like it could be cumbersome in a self defense situation.
I must say that I like the look of the Lone Wolf Defender, does anyone have any experience with it?
Also what do ppl think of A.G. Russell's knife offerings?
And finally I am still interested in any other contenders anyone thinks would be worth my money.

In general A. G. knives are good products. I have never handled the model you are referring to, so I couldn't comment on particulars.

Cold Steel has a 'triple action' dagger that is more secure than a liner-lock. I don't know if its still in production though.

Thanks for the good word on A.G. Russel axtalan0. That cold steel triple action is a knife i had not seen before, ill have to pay attention to it when it gets brought back in 2011. Keep the recommendations coming :D

Brian Tighe Die Daggers are very nice ($475-626):

Take a look at this Boker; Applegate Folding Dagger
Gerber also makes a folding verion of the Applegate/Fairbairn knife.

I don't own one, but I have handled them in the store and they seem solidly built with good lock-up.

How about the Cold Steel Ti Lite? It comes in either a 4" or 6" AUS-8A blade. I have the 6" version, and it's a folding sword.:D.

I don't think you could possibly go wrong with a Brian Tighe, Darrel Ralph or Yuna. That spyderco seems awesome though.

I've CS ti-lite (4" and 6"), CS triple action, SOG pentagone elite, and BM 530:
- BM 530 is a good edc for a dagger, very slim and lightweight
- ti lite are fine weapons open and close, with a wave feature
- CS triple action, a real double edge... But forget about it
- SOG (4" or 5"), good design but mine have too much blade play

But, this AG Russel is very nice (frame lock, 154 CM AND wave feature)

Just take a look on the Al Mar sere 2000, not really a dagger but a must !

I must say that I would love to have just about all of the knives suggested :P
The Benchmade 530 is already one that I have and I think very highly of it.
One thing that I don't understand is how Gerber runs its Applegate-Fairbairn line. I like the design a lot but the covert f.a.s.t. version which is what i was drawn to doesn't even have a blade steel that they want to list for me, and the full size model is 420HC which I though was not a great steel either.
I would gravitate toward the standard covert Applegait model but I am not a large liner lock fan. Can anyone attest to the effectiveness of Gerber's Roto-Lock that works with the liner lock?

I know its a liner lock, but they are extremely well executed. Spyderco Zowada:

I too sought a folding dagger, but I keep coming back to the BM 530. It's tough to beat. Maybe that's why they've been selling them for 20 years. One mod I made was to radius the plastic near the thumbstud so that I could open it faster. Tough one to beat.

I'm not sure if the photo is of the old model folder with the 4.5" blade, if so, I've got it and it's a very nice knife. My only complaint is that it wasn't issued with a clip and Gerber says it was made so that a clip cannot be solidly added.
I also like the Boker folding dagger! I didn't know it existed. It's certainly a lot more affordable than the very nice Brian Tighes.

I want to think that the Gerber has that L-shaped liner lock. This gives you more surface area covered upon lockup, which is never a bad thing. I had the large one many years ago and remember it being a very adequate and well made knife.

The Boker AFD has S60V blade steel. Mine came sharp, but since that time I have purchased a set of Spyderco diamond rods for my Sharpmaker and have gotten the AFD to a hair whittling sharp! It is a very nice piece of cutlery.:)
