I am hoping to get some help. I am trying to find my boyfriend a nice knife for Christmas. I'm looking for something high quality, high durability and is very versatile. I don't want a switchblade or something like that but an all purpose full size knife. I figured that you all would know more than the average person. Please let me know if Im being too vague. I just need some direction.
Thanks everyone..

Are you looking for a work knife or a dress up knife? Also how much $$$ are you wanting to spend?

Give some details. Be specific. It'll make it easier for people to give you suitable suggestions.
Think about:
1. Your price range.
2. Local laws on blade length.
3. What kind of environment will the knife be used in (a knife that would be suitable for the office might not last a week on a construction site, or in an industrial environment).
4. Is he an experienced "knife user"? Is he used to sharpening and maintaining a knife? Many times, knives are a compromise-recurved edges that perform better at most tasks are harder to sharpen, high-carbon steels that hold an edge better, or are less susceptible to damage also have less resistance to corrosion, and require more maintenance.
My .02 to follow:
For a full-size knife, built to last, and at a reasonable cost look at the Benchmade 710 and 730/735.
For smaller knives, that are lightweight, but offer good performance, if not heavy duty construction check out the numerous offerings from Spyderco.
For a "nice" knife, that is both heavy duty, and of impeccable construction, check out the Chris Reeve Knives Sebenza.
Benchmade maintains a forum at www.benchmade.com
Spyderco, and CRK have forums here under "makers/manufacturers", and Spyderco has their own at www.spyderco.com.
You can also see all of these knives, and more by clicking on "store" at the top of your screen, or www.1sks.com
Suddenly "just buying a knife" turns into a monumental undertaking...:p

Hello and welcome to the forums Zoe. As you can probably tell, there are many good quality knives out there of various styles and cost. As Shootist16 and OwenM stated: Find out what you're willing to spend on him and consider your local laws regarding the blade length if this is a knife he will carry daily. For instance, the city of Seattle had a below 3 inch blade length limit for legal carry the last time I heard. Since local laws differ and change, it's a good idea to be mindful and check your laws before you purchase a knife for daily carry.

I appreciate all of your help. Looks like I need to do a whole lot more research on my end and then come back with some more specific questions. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I had no idea that there were laws about blade length.
Thanks again!!

The harderst part is choosing which knife to get. Depending on where you live, if there is a restriction on blade length, you'll find that several companies offer knife designs in several sizes like Spyderco, CRKT, Cold Steel and others.

Hi, I'm a 14 year old boy who happens to have a knife that matches "your vague description." I bought the knife a while back and wasnt really going to ever sell it. But as you know, 14 year old kids can't rely afford expensive knives but I splurged. The knife I have is a limited edition Colt brand knife. Like I said I had no intention of selling but I sort of could use a couple bucks. Anyway lemme tell you about my knife. (I don't know how much you know about knife terms so I'll break it down real simple). The handle is made out of stag (deer horn). Um, the part between the blade and the handle is silver, not chrome, genuine silver. It's a full tang knife. On the hilt (the silver part) it's engraved 100/600 which is the manufacturing number. On the left side of the blade it is inlayed with gold. On the gold portion (I say it's gold I could be wrong sorry) it reads "Team Colt Calf Roping". On the other side of the blade it says Hand Made 8-A Stainless. The blade is razor sharp and has only been sharpened once or twice. The knife also came with a brown leather sheath with a snap enclosure. The sheath and everything about the knife is ultra high quality. I received the knife as a gift so I don't know the MSRP. Oh yea, the blade is 3.5 inches long. The knife is basicly a fancy, high quality, all purpose hunting knife. It's perfect for things such as but not limited to skinning deer. Well I guess that's about it. As for my price, that's neogotiable. I inquired in a forum (actually on this site) and someone replied that they sold them out of a catalogue for a limited time for around $200. I'm not sure if they value has increased or decreased but I'll research it if you're interested. Also, email me at A1countryboy@aol.com and I'll borrow somones scanner and send you a pic of the knife. I hope I was of some help. My other advice to you is if you dont want to spend so much on the knife go to Buckknives.com, they make some really high quality knives for between 50-100$ and I'm sure your boyfriend would appreciate one. Thanks, Bye.
Please email me for more info.

say " i wish i knew what was the best pocketknife to get my
