Give some details. Be specific. It'll make it easier for people to give you suitable suggestions.
Think about:
1. Your price range.
2. Local laws on blade length.
3. What kind of environment will the knife be used in (a knife that would be suitable for the office might not last a week on a construction site, or in an industrial environment).
4. Is he an experienced "knife user"? Is he used to sharpening and maintaining a knife? Many times, knives are a compromise-recurved edges that perform better at most tasks are harder to sharpen, high-carbon steels that hold an edge better, or are less susceptible to damage also have less resistance to corrosion, and require more maintenance.
My .02 to follow:
For a full-size knife, built to last, and at a reasonable cost look at the Benchmade 710 and 730/735.
For smaller knives, that are lightweight, but offer good performance, if not heavy duty construction check out the numerous offerings from Spyderco.
For a "nice" knife, that is both heavy duty, and of impeccable construction, check out the Chris Reeve Knives Sebenza.
Benchmade maintains a forum at
www.benchmade.com
Spyderco, and CRK have forums here under "makers/manufacturers", and Spyderco has their own at
www.spyderco.com.

Suddenly "just buying a knife" turns into a monumental undertaking...
