I'm looking for a good lightweight waterproof jacket that I can carry in my backpack until needed. A hood is a plus, but not necessary. Any ideas?

^ Marmot Precip would be a good choice, some sales going on the older Marmot Mica and Essence as well- all nice and light (and waterproof)

Outdoor Research Helium is another to look at

btw I'd insure you get a hood w/ whatever you choose, very little weight penalty and keeping the bean warm and dry might is a high priority :)

I have a Patagonia Men's Rain Shadow Jacket.

I'm not sure how lightweight you want, but this thing is very lightweight. It says "rain jacket" but I am finding it works for just a light every day jacket perfectly. I have also taken mine hiking on a few occasions now and it's great. Stuff it in the pack and it takes up hardly any room. It's not the warmest thing in the word, but that's what layering is for when hiking.

It does have Patagonia's H2No barrier that is 100% waterproof but breathable. Normally it does not take much for me to get too hot in a jacket... or just in a warm room, but I can leave this jacket on all day.

On the outside it has two hand pockets that each have zippers. The inside also has a nice little mesh pocket that is a great size. The hood is also adjustable and has drawcord hems.

I bought mine from here at their retail location. The jacket was also cheaper when I bought it than the price they have now. I payed $99 for one. Edit: Now that I think about it I'm pretty sure it was on sail when I purchased it. I had to return a Marmot jacket that didn't fit to my liking, and I picked up the Patagonia instead.
