Howdy, fellow blade-nuts!

I'm interested in customizing a knife for my brother. I was hoping somebody could suggest a lower end tanto folder for this project. I'm looking for something with specs like:

4 in blade, maybe just under.
Good scale material (g10, micarta, or carbon fiber)
Flipper (not assisted)
About $100 or less, so it won't be a huge loss if I screw up

That's all I can think of. Just something of good quality for a cheaper knife. The flipper isn't needed, but he'd prefer one.

And before anyone asks, the blade will be ground into a more traditional tanto shape.

Thanks in advance!

Cute name.

May wanna try the Boker Plus Armed Forces. Has the CRKT style dual flippers, an American tanto blade, G10 handles, and usually can be had for around $25 if you want the larger size.

The one that comes to mind for me is the ZT 0400.
I see it running around $120 at the most but usually right around your price range.
It's assisted, however, I believe you can remove the torsion bar to make it manual. If it has a ball detent hole.
It's a good knife and matches everything your looking for as far as I can tell.

The 0400 looks like it'd be a good one to screw around with, but the ergonomics seem... unpleasant.
The Ti M-16 looks like it could work too...

Any more suggestions? I've been looking around myself, but I'm not too familiar with production knives. :D

The 0400 is actually very comfortable to hold, ergos are excellent. However, it doesn't have the composite material you are looking for as far as scales. It's also assisted, but can be made a manual and actually feels better without the assist.

Kershaw has a few that fit your description like the RJ2, Brawler, and Zing tanto. Of those 3 though, only the Zing is a manual flipper, and I don't know if the RJ2 and Brawler can be de-assisted easily.

Benchmade has the Griptilian and Mini-Grip in a tanto version, but doesn't have a flipper. The handle feels kinda plasticky though.

CRKT also has some tanto models like the M16 and Shenanigan.

Keep an eye out on the Exchange for a used Emerson CqC-7. They come in Both the standard Chisel grind or the V grind but the V grinds are harder to find. There is the Ultratech II from Ontario. The kershaw Tanto Blur is a nice option if you like assisted. SOG Vulcan I Arc-Lock Manual tanto in Vg-10 is right in that price range.

I think you meant the Utilitac from Ontario. Ultratech is the Microtech OTF.

There are a lot of people running some great deals on the ZT 0700. Right in your price range. I recommend using Kershawguy.
