I am leaning towards the camillus heat but would consider other options.I would like something with a carbon blade for easy sharpening but i guess this is about it.That or the gerber gator with the 154 cm blade .What do you folks think would be the best choice?

Out of the two you have chosen, I would get the Camillus Heat. I would also strongly suggest you look at Benchmade and Spyderco!!

Spyderco Native - $40 knife with S30V steel which kicks butt.

Benchmade Griptilian - $50 knife with 440C steel which also kicks butt.

GO with the Heat. I doubt The Gerber has 154cm. A lot of info on these are old specs. I thought a Mini-Covert had 154cm but turned out to have AUS-6 or maybe worse:barf: If in doubt, refer to:barf: Buyer-be-ware!

Yea, what Copper Crayon said. Check out the locks.

Bladetech Pro Hunter Lite - you can pick it up for $50 at knifeoutlet.com, slightly higher from Bladetech themselves. Very well-built for the money. All the advantages of a FRN handled Spydie but with dual-steel liners. I've only been using mine for a few days but it looks like it's gonna be a winner.

The Blade-Tech Lite series are definitely great little knives. I bought one of the Mouse Lite models about a year ago and it makes a very good edc. (and fairly inexpensive @ 37.95)

BUT... For the money you'll be hard pressed to find anything better than a Walmart Spyderco S30V Native FOR $39.95.

Start going to flea markets, government sale locations (state, federal, city), and yard sales.

Good deals abound.

I would look at the (1) Benchmade Griptillian 551, (2) Benchmade PIKA, (3) Spyderco "Rescue" 93mm and (4) Kershaw's Ken Onion Leek (assisted opening).

There are lots of good knives for $50 or under:

-BM Griptilian (you have to look around), one of the best EDC knives out there, IMHO. 440c is a good steel and the AXIS is an excellent lock, the handles are very comfortable. You can get a Mini Griptilian if you want something smaller.

-Ka-Bar Dozier folders. I have the thumb notch folder and it is a very good knife, and it costs around $20!

-SAK. You can probably find one to suit your needs, in fact I would recommend one as a companion for whatever knife you get. Even a simple Spartan is great to have around. Tim at www.sosakonline.com has some used SAKs in very good condition that he sells for around $7, you can't get a better deal! Plus all the money goes to charity.

-Opinel, you have lots of sizes to choose from, in stainless and carbon steel. Great cutters and dirt cheap.

-Spyderco FRN knives, the Endura, Delica, Native, Centofante III are all excellent knives with great steel (VG-10) for around $40.

-The good old Buck 110 is an excellent option, you can get it for as low as $25, or pay $60 for Cabela's S30V model (which is totally worth it, IMHO)

The Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter is the most knife for $50 that I've ever seen. A super deal and more knife for the money than anything else I bought all year. IMO. I got mine at www.newgraham.com for just over $56.

spyderco delica, or many SAK options out there for $50. or maybe even some of kershaw's USA made stuff... like ken onion if you like the assisted opening like the heat, sorry but i'm just not that found of the heat line.

Ka-bar Dozier folders with Aus-8 steel are great knives for around $20

Also AG Russell has the Ka-bar Dozier D2 folder for $49.99 This knife is hard to beat at that price.
