I have a nice example with a s/n in the 600Ks, and it has developed an extraction problem. It loads and fires correctly, however the extractor tends to slip off the .308 casing before extracting. There is no visible damage to the spent casing and the fired cases can be extracted with only light finger pressure. The ejector is working correctly, so I suspect that I have a problem with either the breech bolt, or the extractor. Is there anything that I can do to adjust this thing?

Unfortunately, Savage no longer services its older guns. Does anyone have any suggestions?

When is the last time you took the extractor out and cleaned it ? Dirty extractors and firing pins are a fairly common cause of problems. Is the extractor worn or broken ?If the extractor and extractor slot are clean it may be an extractor spring that is broken or weakened.

Try Numrich Gun Parts at :

First I would look at the extractor. Is the edge still sharp, is it in one piece, is it clean? If all thats ok, like the post above said, check extractor tension. It should be fairly hard to pull it towards you. Not too sure on the Savage 99, but it should hold the round against the bolt face. If you do need new parts, Numrich should have it. They have almost anything. HTH.

When did Savage stop servicing their guns? My buddy had a 99 in 250-3000 and had it seviced there. Westfield Massachusetts. I think their custom shop handled it. It was a few years ago, and things may have changed. Sad. The 99 is a nice rifle.

Paul,

Savage changed hands in 1995; and, they have sinced discontinued the model 99 and have limited service to their newer line of guns.

All,

Thanks for the assist. I took it apart and it was pretty clean. During ejection the cartrige is held in place by a combination pressure applied by the extractor (right), the breech bolt (top), and the automatic cut off rail(left). I believe that the problem may have been caused by a tired spring which extended the automatic cut off rail (see #18 in diagram below). I have gone ahead and replaced it with a stronger spring and the rifle seems to be working correctly.

This diagram is actually for a later 99-C, but this component was used in common by both rifles.

I will be testing it ASAP, but it may have to wait a week so we can clean up the hurricane damage.

and are darned good rifles, i have my uncles old rifle (which looks 95+% believe it or not) that is pre WW2 in .300 savage and i still hunt with it every yr, its almost too much gun for the smallish hill country bucks, it will knock there socks off lol, it is about the same as a .308 winchester, about 150-200 fps slower, not bad for a almost 100 yr old round.
