I'm wondering what you would suggest for a TOMAHAWK to be used for woods carry to perform typical tasks, such as splitting light wood for campfires, carving larger pieces of wood prior to knife work, can also be used to hammer and drive things like tent stakes and finally, the main reason for a 'hawk, possible defense/fight work?

Is there one that can cover all these needs? If so, what do you recommend?

Thanks!

Hi Plainsman
Depends on what you want to spend. If you want a custom the first guy who always comes to mind is Steve at Coal creek forge. If you want to spend a little to start Cold steel tomahawks can't be beat for the money, IMO. For heavier work the rifleman has a wideish edge and a hammer poll. A smaller hammer poll is the trail hawk with a narrower edge and smaller hammer and lighter. There are lots of pics on this forum.

If you want something that's highly usable, but not incredibly expensive, I'd go with the Cold Steel Pipe Hawk. It isn't actually a pipe hawk, but is designed in the same aesthetics common with one. It's got a standard handle length of 22" which allows a great range in grips to either give full force chops to drive through a log or make short work of tent stakes, choking up toward the head will allow you to shave down wood to be processed (and you can even do some beginning work by grasping the head itself).

I recently got one and I think it's a great pair-up with my HI Farm Knife and CS Spike Hawk. After my hand has finished healing from my accident and can grip things, I plan on taking my trio and putting them to work making a local-wood sourced bedframe for my mother.

If you don't have a problem with spending a few more dollars, I'm sure you can talk to our very own Mr. Steve(Coal Creek Forge). He makes some of the most beautiful hawks I've seen, and from what I hear has a good price-range.

+1 on the CS pipe hawk.

I've never heard anything bad, or seen anything less than spectacular from Coal Creek Forge.

Also, you can look at Fort Turner hawks. Between CS and Coal Creek in price, and he makes some really nice stuff.
