Aynone know where to buy a GOOD horizontal disk sander or where to get plans to build one or both? Would like it to be VS.

I tried there first. I got my KMG grinder from Rob but he doesn't have any pictures of his horizontal disk grindera nd is unable to make the bladeshow in Atlanta this year. I just have a hard time spending $900 for something I have never seen. So please post a picture of one of his if you have it or anyone else and more ideas too. Thanks

Buy a disk from Tru Grit, K&G or wherever, then mount the motor so the disk is horizontal. The first time I saw one it was in Jim Ferguson's shop. He had a cart with shelves in it. He reversed the top shelf so the lip was down, drilled a shaft hole and bolt holes in the shelf, then mounted a motor to the underside of the shelf. He put the disk on top. It worked great. He had a very small indoor shop and a covered area outside, so he wheeled a lot of things in and out.

Time for a dumb novice question, What is a horizontal disk grinder used for in knife making.

Hi Charles, This is the set-up that I've exhibited at the Bladeshow for the last few years. I've finally gotten around to taking a few photos of them.

It uses the same components as the standard disk grinder: 1 hp, 1725 rpm, variable speed, instantaneous reversing, and a billet 9" disk:

But everything has been mounted on a cantilevered plate so the shaft is vertical:

I hope this helps,

Hi Rob,

Is this setup available? Or is it just for exhibits at shows to guage interest?

Yes, It is available. I try to keep all the components on hand. It takes a day or so to put it together, then crate/pack for shipping.

Dang it, Rob! Wish you hadn't shown me those pictures. Now I have to wipe the drool off my chin.

That's cool ! Sure looks like a handy tool....

Does the plate work with your vertical disc grinder components?

Just wondering if I can convert the one I got from you back and forth :D not sure if you even sell the plate separately....

I like it!

Yep, all you need is this plate.

Everything else is interchangeable.

Thanks Rob for the pic's. I will be contacting you shortly. That is exactly what i wanted.
As usual you always have the best!!!

I bought a 1hp dc motor and controler on e-bay for less than $100.00. Got a steel disk from Koval (i think) mounted it on a heavey base from a resteruant table and am very pleased with it.

I got my horizontal disk grinder from Rob Frink this week. What a great little rig. Cant wait for this weekend to give it a go.

Thanks Rob !!

Surplus Center in Nebraska sells 1/2 and 1 horse motors with the speed control already on the motor. they have a "Cface" mount so work very well on horizontal with a disc. the bigger ones work great for replacement on belt grinders or vs conversions to grinders. Yes they have plenty of low end torque for any thing I've ever needed including hogging the bark off forgings or damascus.
