A good friend of mine is a avid hunter. I wanted to see what knife would be ideal for a hunter, processing deer or smaller fury creatures. What ever a hunters needs might be. I don't know how big what brand or steel would be the best. I would like to keep it around $100. Something that would suit his needs but also impress him, this will be a surprise for all the help he has given me over the years. He's not a knife nut like us. Thank you in advance for your help.:D

To my mind the finest design for a hunting knife is the Schrade 152 Sharpfinger. There are lots available on the big auction site.

I have more expensivie stuff, but I really like the Spyderco Moran drop point as a knife used for field chores such as field dressing and some skinning. I believe they run around $100. Have not priced them in a good while.

I would recommend completely different knives for dressing small game: fish, birds or rabbits than I would for deer/elk size game although is is perfectly possible to slaughter any of the above with a Case Peanut (though not my 1st choice for any of the above tasks).
So; a fixed blade bird/trout for small game and a 4"+/- drop point or Nessmuk for larger animals.

I've gutted fish, skinned and quartered elk, and done everything in between with my Benchmade Griptilian. Seems to do it all pretty well, in my opinion. Plus, it's a great EDC. Might be a good knife to consider.

Bark River, BHK, and Fallkniven all have some very nice hunting knives. I prefer a 3.5 - 4.5" blade, and lean more to the drop point style. No folders. Trap too much crap to get really clean...easily. That sharp finger style with the trailing point will knick a gut, sooner or later...mostly sooner.

I concour. Folding hunters like the Buck 110 and Schrade LB-7 are nice and will do the job, but no one likes cleaning guts and blood out of the liners of a folding knife that can't be disassembled. The sharpfinger in it's belt sheath is nearly as unobtrusive until you need it And, well as the old ad said,...

Also a Sharpfinger fan. Get one of the older ones made with carbon steel though. Browse ebay for one with a nice patina. Shouldn't be more than $25 shipped.

This year I used a Gerber Gator in s30v that I got on closeout from Cabelas for like $30. It performed great from gutting to skinning to processing my deer. The snap on the sheath broke immediately after I got it but Gerber sent me another one with nothing more than an email.

The first knife I got for hunting specifically was a Buck Vanguard. It has worked great for me. However, it may be a little large for smaller animals, which I use the Izula for.

What is a ideal size knife for deer? I know he field dresses his deer, not sure of what lengths he gos to in the field thou.

No such thing as ideal or everyone would use the same platform. Everyone has their own preference.

Personally I like anything under 5" in length. A good grip that holds up under bloody conditions is important too. Holding an edge is nice. Just about everything else doesn't matter except for user preference.

CRKT Onion Skinner could be a solid choice, and A.G. Russell makes the Deer Hunter/Bird and Trout/Hunter's Scalpel series that are very nice and very affordable.

3.5 - 4.5"

Some decent ones:
Benchmade 162 Bushcrafter
Benchmade 15005 Bone Collector
