I've been looking at the bk7 for a while now, then I realized it's not 1/4" thick like the smaller BK2. Is there any Becker other than the bk2 with 1/4" thick blade? The BK7 is .188" which is roughly 3/16 of an inch if I'm not mistaken. Also, why would they make the bk2 (companion) 1/4"?

According to the KA-BAR website the only other Becker that's 1/4" thick is the BK3. As to why the BK2 is a 1/4" thick as opposed to 3/16" I don't know.

The BK is 1/4" and it is a beast of a knife. It can take a lot of hard use and keep asking for more. The BK10 is similar and is 3/16". It surpasses the 2 for some tasks (slicing and fine work) where as the added weight and thickness of the 2 make it better for other's (spliting). The main limiting factors for both these blades is the blade length. As to why the bk 2 is 1/4"...why not :D

The 7 is a very capable knife but I would suggest looking at the 9. It is a bit heavier but not uncomforatbly so. It will chop with the best of them and blows the doors of the rest of the beckers for chopping except the 4 which a different beast entirely while still be capable of finer tasks which typically are more suited to smaller blades. If you want to cover all your bases, a 9 paired with either a tweener or the neckers and you'll be set.

The BK-7 being thinner blade stock than the BK-2 is a big plus in my book. I don't know the reason for the 1/4" steel, but many use this thickness on their "survival knives" or used to. Thinner steel is easier to use and plenty strong for most uses short of cutting car bodies.
