I'm looking for something for defense purposes...something small preferably something with an ankle strap or with a belt clip so I can wear it horizonatlly on belt. Any ideas???????

Different jurisdictions have different laws about what kind of carry is legal. Do you know the rules in your city and state?

Generally speaking, unless you have real training in martial arts, you aren't going to be more effective with any particular knife, so a small utility folder is probably a good bet. Especially since a knife you use regularly will come to hand easier in an emergency and fit there more comfortably.

How much money were you looking to spend? What knives do you have now that might do the job, or that you already know would not?

Check into swampratknifeworks.com and look at the "Bandicoot", you can't beat it for the price! Great steel and grip with a perfect size all for under $100 bucks. If you are looking to spend more and go for a imo (top of the line) look into www.bussecombat.com and go for the "Public Defender" That is one I really want to have!

What I have been carrying now is either... my CRKT Carson which I love but its to small...my Gerber Guardian which is great but I hate the sheath...I was looking for one of the old ankle holsters Gerber used to make but I couldn't find one...then sometimes I'll wear one of my Gerber Mark I's or my Al Mar SERE. I want something as big as the Guardian with a more versatile sheath in the $100 to $150 range.

If "LAWS DO NOT CONCERN YOU" why not carry a nice Baby Glock or an H&K USP compact:rolleyes:

Better yet, how about a L.A.W.S. rocket?

In that case, Bladeswinger's idea sounds good. Swamp Rat makes awesome knives. I have their Ratchet, a pocket-sized hatchet, and saying it's tough and sharp understates the case. The Bandicoot just came out, it's a great size, and if you don't like the sheath, you'd still be within budget getting custom Kydex or leather to fit your exact needs.

One nice point about Swamp Rat is, the handle will work in cold or heat, and gives you a non-slip indexed grip, unlike some of these commando-style barrel handles.

Wolf, who's says that wasn't already an option? ;)
Esav, what does the sheath looklike on that swamp rat?

Nicky, the website didn't say anything about the sheath, so I thought it was their all-purpose nylon with kydex insert. But on the BF Swamp Rat forum, the thread introducing the Bandicoot had this:

The Bandicoot comes with an American made, vegetable tanned leather sheath that has been hot molded to fit the knife. It offers a very secure and comfortable fit. The natural color has been preserved with oil and the welted edge has been nicely finished. Available in either right or lefthanded models.

It does come with a nice leather sheath, but I will get a kydex made for mine. Great size knife for personal carry;)

If you want a small knife that has great defensive applicability, then I strongly recommend S&W's version of the LaGriffe, with a fully-serrated blade. It is very small, has the finger-hole for excellent retention, and has a wickedly hooked blade that is made for slashing. It is a great last-ditch weapon. Other knives that are larger are harder to conceal, harder to retain and require more thought/training to use effectively.

PS the sheath is not so hot, might require some modification. But hey it's $25!

Get a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande!...That monster is like a folding saw!..
