Looking for a Knife Like Cetan

After deciding that I needed a small fixed blade knife to carry daily, I decided that I needed a Cetan in D2 with maroon micarta handle scales. That is, until I figured out that there is an 18 month wait for a Cetan. Rob does great work, and I'd love to support him, but it looks like plenty of other people are already doing that.

Now I need to know of anyone who makes a very similar knife in the same price range. Can anyone recommend a maker of such a knife who has a backlog of a couple months or less? Maybe someone whose knives are stocked by a dealer somewhere?

Of course, I guess if I was really lucky, someone would just mail me a Cetan and then I wouldn't have to worry about it. Any takers?

I would assume you are looking for a small work knife. You might check out Lynn Griffith. I dont know if he would make one in D2, but he does wonders with ats34. If you have to have it in D2 then how about Bob Dozier? I dont know what Bobs wait is, but dealers like AG Russell stock some of his models.

For a nice personal-sized ATS-34 blade, check out forumites Barry and Phillip Jones as well. I picked up a great little fixed blade form them at a recent show. Here's a pic:

It has a 3" blade and an OAL of 7". Nice grooved micarta handles over a full tang. Hand rubbed finish. Just a sweet little knife at a nice price. I even received a Christmas card from them.

Kelly,
Thanks for putting in a good word about us. We are glad that you like the knife and the Christmas card.

Archie,
We can make that in D2 as well as ATS-34. We only have a three month backlog at this moment, but have a few already to ship in ATS-34.

The Dozier K-6 might just fit the bill, or perhaps the Griffith Tracker if you want one of the finest pieces of ATS-34 available today. Both these links are to available knives, so brook no delay!

You might also try checking out Steve Mullin -- D2 (or 440V) working fixed blades 3"-5", reasonably priced with unique, elegant Cocobolo handles. Check out his Pack River Outdoor series:

www.nidlink.com/~packriver/index.html

I just recently learned of his work, but he's apparently very well-respected and has been making knives for 25 years. His Pack River folder was very favorably reviewed by Joe Talmadge about a year ago; perhaps one of the "best-kept secrets" comparable in form, function, and price to the William Henry folders and the mighty Sebenza. Steve Mullin probably deserves to be on that list of "under-rated," or at least under-recognized makers.

Senator,
Thanks for the good words. It is always a pleasure to hear kind remarks from our customers.

Archie,
Phillip and I would be more than happy to take on the task of making your knife. That is, if you want us to.

Archie,

Trust me! Please! I'm sworn to secrecy so all I'll say is the answer to your prayers, including lead time (and your wallet) will unfold with announcements that should appear within the next few weeks.

Hold off any purchases for "Cetan" knives until then.

BTW are you hard over about D2? Would Talonite interest you?

Bald1,
...mysterious! Intriguing! I love it

Almost like waiting for Christmas.

Archie,
take a look at Neil Blackwood's site at http://www.geocities.com/Eureka/Meeting/5520/index.html
He works in D2, so if your heart is set on D2, I'm sure he can come up with something to your liking if you can't find something close to what you want from the nice selection he already has. He's great to work with too, so if you have special requests, I'm sure he'll accommodate you if at all possible.

Archie,

I saw this Canoe Knife from Bob Dozier on A.G. Russell's site the other day. Might be just what you're looking for.

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....here it's tomorrow already.

Try Mike Irie. If you want I will send you some pictures. If you do not mind finishing the knife by yourself you can have "Cetan" like knife for 50 USD (BG-42) or 45 (ATS-34). This is price of finished blade w/o slabs.

I have his Sport 200 and it is excellent knife. And one of his blades in on its way to me.

Lots of good information showing up here. I'm investigating some of the recommendations, but bald1's mysterious talk of talonite has me intrigued enough that I won't be making any decisions until I find out what he's talking about.

Whaaaaaa......at??? Talonite Cetan with less than an 18 month wait???

Hmmmm... could it be that after this/these Talonite Cetan's are available, the wait for a custom (say, a Talisman) from Rob might decrease?????

Archie, what Bob said!

Sorry for my huge backlog, and I certainly have been seeing some attrition due to it. Patr of the large backlog is due to folks like Hoods Woods ordering large numbers of knives, there are others as well, just cant say anything at this point. Hang in there Archie, and thanks for considering me to make you a knife.

Did someone say D2???
Thanks for the recommendation Chiro and Arizona!
I make a version of my Small Hunter that is a very good all around utility knife. It has less of a drop point than the normal hunter model. There is a picture of the Small Hunter on my website. I have in stock, a basic bead blast and micarta, "user" version!

Try Newt Livesay's US Marshall, one of Lynn Griffith's designs, or something from Bob Dozier.

Archie,

Contact me off-line, I might be able to help you out with some info.
