As the title says I am looking for a knife sharpener. It is for my Dad. He has always sharpened free hand for the past 40+ years. He taught me to sharpen free hand. He could always get a knife sharp to his satisfaction. Well after a small stroke an arthritis getting worse. He is struggling to get his knives sharp. So he wants something along the lines of a lansky Deluxe 5 stone set with the jig with the different angles on it. I have seen several complaints about the new clamp with the foam at the tips. I have personally only handled this one model an found it would be difficult to sharpen a short knife from edge to spine. The clamp got in the way on anything below 30 degrees. So what is there along this line or mods that could be made to the lansky. I have seen a Smith's that's along theses lines. Is it a good option? What else is there?
Sorry this is so long.

Thanks for you help

Mike

If he already has a stone, how about a wedge you put on the stone?

Or a stick to raise the knife off the edge of a table? Closer to table higher angle, further back lower angle

There are also "Edge Pro" type sharpeners for about ~$20 on ebay/amazon, patent is supposedly expired , and I read on the internet they can do 10 degrees per side

I do own a KME and it is a great tool. Get the diamond hones. It is trouble free and you can put an amazing edge on a knife with it.
