Greetings!

First post here. Just getting back into knives from 20 years or so. Looking for a NEW knife like the xm-18 for around $500. Just bought a new s30v combo Military and it'll be here Monday (tomorrow). That'll be my edc for awhile until I figure exactly what I want in a knife out. However, I also want a more robust folder design like the xm-18 as well. Any suggestions for a NEW knife that's the xm-18's closest equal, with respect to the xm-18's design intent, for ~$500?

Things I like, or think I like, if it helps:
1) S90V blade
2) Carbon fiber or Ti

Thanks in advance!

Wait for the ZT0560 or 0561. Should be out in a month. They're around $275. Hinderer designed.

If you want robust, I would pass on S90V, as I suspect it would break in two if you tried to pry with it. Give the Lionsteel SR-1 a look if you want.

I might suggest that nothing is really a good substitute for the knife you really want.

OTOH, if you care to narrow down the concept of what *you* mean by "the xm-18's closest equal, with respect to the xm-18's design intent", I would be happy to give recommendations.

For cutting things, the Military you have on order is among the most highly recommended knives. For serious prying...any VERY sharp knife would scare the heck out of me. As far as VERY WELL made "hard use" knives in the $500 price range, there are many!

You can find Hinderer XM-18's for $500, and plenty under $600 on the forums. You just cant ummmm think about it when you see one. I have my xm-18 that I use and carry and it was $500 including shipping and paypal on the forums. While everyone else was too busy asking what the size was, I chimed in immediately and stated that I wanted it, no matter what size it was. Three days later, I was flipping it. Its all about luck really.

I would say the closest your going to find that closely resembles a xm-18 is the new flipper from ZT that is coming out soon. Its basically a Hinder/ZT Flipper just like the xm. And I am sure it will be well under the $500+ Hinderer tag. I would also recommend the ZT0550, the ZT0301, the crk umnumzaan just to name a few that I have or have had that are right there with the Hinderer.

ZT makes amazing knives. I have a 301 and its just awesome through and through. They provide all the materials in a knife that the big boys charge an arm and a leg for. With ZT, you get S30V blade, titanium frame-lock, G10 scales, hinderer lock-bar stabilizer, in the $200 range.........with Strider, you cant touch these features unless your in the $475-$500+ range. And IMO, the ZT's are made better. They don't look like an amateur put them together, kicked them across the floor until they were all scuffed up, packaged it up and sold as new. Just Sayin !!! All the ZT's are of the same quality, just different designs is all. The CRK umnumzaan is well documented and a TON of info can be found on the CRK forum page.

I would say the ZT/Hinderer 560 would be the closest as well, also take a look at Strider Knives SMF (4" blade) or SNG (3.5" blade)
