Looking for a knife

Carothers Performance Knives (CPK) Basic Field Knife, or their FK2 might be a reasonable fit. They have a subforum here on BF.

I like their 6” utility knife. I just wish it wasn’t in 3v. Great looking knives. I’d buy one of their choppers in 3v.

Edit: I like the looks of all their knives. I just wanted an M390 or Elmax. Something similar?

There's probably well over fifty decent choices that almost anyone would be happy with for the bigger knives, but most of the higher quality ones are made with 3V or A2 steel. It mostly comes down to steel preference, brand preference, design preference, ergonomics, and of course budget. The thing is though, once you get to that size it's mainly all about the chopping and blade toughness. The Lion Steel M7 (7") is made of Sleipner steel, might be what you're looking for.

Why not just get the Dozier? Bob's heat treatment for D2 is practically legendary. And I don't consider a 6" blade to be suitable for chopping anyway, except in an emergency. YMMV...

Right. I own two Dozier’s. I wanted one with a little bit longer blade than what he offers. I like the Lion Steel M5s better than the 6 or 7.

The way that CPK heat treats their 3V makes it better than regular 3V. Take a look at some of the videos that Nathan the Machinist has made in regards to his knives' capabilities

TRC Apocalypse maybe? Decent bit of $$ but in my use Elmax comes close to m390/20cv in edge retention when the HT is good..

Most of White Rivers knives come in s35vn.. mehh

Some flavor of Bark River possibly, although they are really pumping out the 3v nowadays..

First choice, like everybody else, would still be CPK though.. or just get the Dozier.

Spending that much already why not just commission a custom?? Plenty of good makers on here who would be happy to hook you up, and you would get exactly what you want..👍

I’ve got a bark river bravo 1.5 as well and like it. But, if I’m going to look at 3v… Carothers or GSO?

Carothers or GSO?
Shhhh, don't say that too loudly.. we don't speak of "they who will not be named"..

Easy choice for me,.. Carothers lol, Nathan carries his reputation for a reason.

If your thinking of going with the other option, you would probably be better off investing your money in lotto tickets..

Damn lol. They look nice but I’ll stay away. I may go back and revisit the guardian as well if 3v is on the table. I guess Carothers heat treat is pretty good. So, that may be the deciding factor.

I would go so far as to say that Carothers heat treat is THE standard to which all other 3V is compared too.. yes it is that good.

Nothing against Bradford though, I've got a Guardian 3 and 4.5. They do make very nice knives for the money.
