Hey all, I'm new here. Looks like a nice place :D

I'm currently carring around a S&W HRT . . . It's okay . . .

Okay, not really. I like the way it looks, but that's about it. Any advice on some really solid "well wrought" knives that I could look into? Folders in particular. (preferably under or around the $100 dollar mark)

Any specifics? Like size, blade style, handle materials, lock, etc? I can tell you what I think are great folders in the $100 range:

Spyderco Paramilitary
Cabelas version of the Benchmade mini-Griptilian (or full-size) in D2
Ritter mini-Grip or full size Griptilian in S30V
Benchmade 707

And for less money, some good choices:

Spyderco Endura 4, Delica 4, D'Allara drop point
Standard version of Benchmade Griptilian/mini Griptilian

There are so many variables, what fits one person's ideal does nothing for someone else. You will get a lot of suggestions on this thread, look at all of them and you will probably find something just to your liking.

Well I can recommend:

From Kershaw

Speed / Spec Bump , it's a full sized, assisted opening knife , it cost about $70.00

The Avalanche also A/O a little more compact but well worth the money , around $75.00

Another great deal from Kershaw is the Storm II its a non - assisted opening knife, you can get it at WalMart for around $30.00. Don't let the price fool you , it's a very high quality knife.

From Benchmade

The full sized Griptilian , axis lock, non assisted around $70.00, a lot of knife for the money.

The 910 Stryker , Titanium framed liner lock around $90.00. Very basic design but excellent for a tough knife.

I own this one too, the 425 Gravitator , but this one is defiantly a matter of taste. $107.00

Last one.. Its made for HK by Benchmade

Of all the above my favorite for the price is the Kershaw Speed/Spec Bump.

Okay, some of the knives that I'm looking at now are:

Benchmade Apparition 670,

Spyderco Adventura,

Benchmade D2 Steel Mini-Griptillian,

and the

Spyderco A.T.R.

Any opinions or other ideas?

Spyderco native- s30v steel at walmart for 40 bucks
Endura 3 or 4 and delica 3 or 4 from spyderco- vg-10- around 50 bucks.
any of the spyderco byrd line
if you want some extra tools- a victorinox one hand trekker
if you want pliers too- a leatherman wave

I've done things with a byrd raven that no knife should have to experience, and it has taken it and then some.
don't get scared off by the price, they're about as much as you paid for the Smith and Wesson and much much better.

Thanks for all the help guys, but now I'm stuck again.

It's down to the Coldsteel Ti-Lite Zytel Handle or the Ontario Model 1 Folder . . .

Opinions? Anyone have any experience with these specific knives?

the ti-lite is going to bring lots of stares from NKP, and the blade shape isn't very utilitarian. other than that I like it. :)

I have the RAT 1. It is a handful of knife. Blade has no play side to side or up and down. The handle is extremely comfortable. Just a stout tool and very sharp.

My suggestion is to handle them if possible and decide. I bought mine on-line without handling it first, but I was very surprised at how well built it was.

Above all you have to decide on what tasks you expect the knife to perform, then go from there.

Good Luck

I have the RAT 1 and Redhat is right. Is is a very strong folder with excellent F&F. It is not as good as the Spyderco Military but the R1 is a fine knife.
Here is a comparison pic.

Benchmade makes some very nice knives. If size is something you like, I also like the Cold Steel Voyagers. Spyderco makes some very good knives in many different price ranges but are you buying for "looks" or are you going to be using this knife? If you're settled on the Ti-Lite, make sure it's one of the newer models with AUS 8. (It's recently been upgraded from 440A, but costs the same.) Not a huge difference, but you're the customer.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think that I'll go with the RAT 1 after all :)

Thought the Ti-Lite looks a lot cooler . . . LoL

Thanks again!
