Its Eric here....my question centers on a comparison between the Benchmade Styker with the M-2 high speed tool blade and the new Ka Bar D-2 extreme tactical folder with the new D-2 tool steel blade. I am going to buy one of these knives but cannot find and advantage of one over the other...however I am fairly new to the pros and cons of the high speed tool steels other than they generally rank higher on the Rockwell hardness scale and they are supposedly much more wear resistent. The knife will be used primarily as a personal protection/carry around tool though I some how find a way to end up doing alot of various cutting tasks.I would like to know which is the all around stronger, hold their end longer, more useful (functional) knife. Money is not really a problem but I would like to make up my mind soon. To any who have either or know someone who does any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all that answer.

A lot of the factors you mention have to do with more than just the type of steel. Edge geometry, type of grind, heat treat, hardness, handle and lock construction, etc all play into it. Both are reputed to be great knives. I would try to handle both knives and make the choice based on ergonomics than steel. See which one feels better in your hand, which is lighter in your pocket, etc. That could be more important than the steel in the long run.

I agree with Chiro. Both steels are damn good and for a pocket knife the difference in steel performance won't be nearly as great as the other factors Chiro mentions- ergonomics, style, etc.

I have had one of the KaBars and held the Benchmade. The KaBar is quite a small knife. IMHO the Kabar is NOT worth even half of what it retails for ($140) but some places seem to have it for half that. It has a good tight blade but the thumb disk is poorly finished. It has and holds a good edge though. I can't believe I am saying this but the Benchmade is the better knife! IMHO
(I got the KaBar for $25 at Brigade Quartermasters!! I gave it away)

I disagree. I've had a D2 KBar and I feel it's every bit the knife that the Benchmade is. It's been in my weekly carry rotation since they first came out. Don't discount it!!!
