Here's the deal--I'd like to buy a lockback or liner lock, about 4" or 5" closed, handle material doesn't matter, but I would like 1095.

Now I know that both Queen and Mooremaker produce such a knife in 1095 but we are looking at $70 to $90 dollars.

Does anybody know if a cheaper lockaback/liner lock with 1095 is available from any source? I thinking more of the price range of a Buck 112--SMKW has them for $37 and sometimes they are cheaper on e-bay, but, of course they are not the 1095.

If I can't find anything in 1095, I'll buy the Buck 112.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks. That's what I wrote about, I mis-spoke and called it a S+M. I definately will keep it in mind, that root beer looks great.

Take a look on ebay for a Case Copperlock with yellow derlin scales and a CV blade. Case's CV and regular 1095 are very close in composition and performance.

Will do, OTguy. They have a mini copperlock on there right now. I'll keep watching. Isn't it strange how what used to be the most common blade steel--1095 or CV--is now the toughest to find? I could understand it if what has replaced it in the folders--the stainless steel--was better, but from what I've read on these forums, it isn't.

ACE carries the Case copperlock full size in CV. I believe it's around $35. It's a good knife if you like a warncliffe.

Check out:

http://www.collectorknives.net/mooremaker.html

They have two Mooremaker lockbacks in 1095 for much less than what you were talking. ($58-69)

I have ordered from them before and have had good luck.

I also cannot highly enough recommend one of the Weidmannsheil trick locks available on Ebay or from www.bulldogbrandknives.com.

Here's one:

For $42 USD, you get a carbon steel main blade and NICE STAG!!!

I have been using mine as an EDC for about a year now and really love it. The "Trick" to the trick lock is that you push down on the little blade, which unlocks the main blade. It's a little different, but locks up like a bank vault.

Hope this helps.

Shoot, you may be able to find a CV Copperlock at Lowe's. They sometimes have CV blades in their cases, mixed in with the stainless poopoo.
I'd say get one of those. I have a stainless Copperlock (don't normally buy stainless like that, but I figured I'd try it out), and if it was CV I'd probably carry it.

Otherwise, as suggested, get the Mountain Man lockback. It's thicker than the Copperlock. Fills the hand, rides heavier in the pocket (more like a 112), while the Copperlock is slimmer. It's still sturdy, but has a totally different feel to it.

Peace.

The full size Case Copperlock wasn't always a wharncliff blade of course...with a little luck, maybe you can still catch one of these around...

Sharpthangs, is that site live? When I found it it didn't have a name, just the IP address, and a LOT of broken links. Still has the broken links.
And I e-mailed the guy where it says e-mail this person for sales or other questions, and never got a reply.

Make sure you go to the www.bulldogbrandknives and not the numerical one. Yeah, I'd call them rather than order online.

They can tell you what they have in stock and usually ship the same day.

They also have a store on eBay. Look up Weidmannsheil and it'll pop up.

They put out a print catalog a couple of times a year, if you get on their list. It's got the latest and greatest.

I've heard a few people complain about their customer service, but I've never had a problem. Their shipping is a little high, though.

Good luck.

Thanks for the pic El Lobo, thats the one I was thinking of. Should have been more specific.

Wish they'd make a CV model with bone scales, I'd buy one quick.

Agreed on the Weidmannsheil trick lock. I have one and it's a heck of a knife for the money. Mine has a rock solid lockup and is on the upper end of the German style of construction.

Don't buy the hype that you will hear about these being left overs from a company that went out of business due to "not wanting to lower their standards". That's the line a lot of sellers are using on eBay. Truth is that Weidmannsheil went out of business and are now being remade by one of the big German factories, but the product is top notch nonetheless.

Here's mine:

How does the "trick lock" work? I'd be interested to learn more... perhaps I'll have to get one myself. :)

On another note, the Case lockbacks (Shark Tooth, Hammerhead, and Mako) are very nice. They're on a par with Buck 110 & 112 (solid construction, nearly identical blade steel and shape, usually come with a nice leather belt sheath). I'm in the process of 'bay-combing for one now (hopefully I'll find a nice vintage one, perhaps from the late 70s/early 80s). If you can find an older model in good shape, pick it up. The new ones are just as good, though, so if you like 'em go for it.

Peace.
Alex.

Alex,
The trick lock is pretty simple, just push down on the closed secondary blade. The kick on the secondary blade egages a transfer bar that raises the spring on the main blade & disengages the lock.

CPirtle, that's a nice one. Mine is a modified sheepsfoot rather than a clip point, which I wasn't sure I wanted. Now that I've used it quite a bit, I really like it.

I agree with what you say. It's on the upper end of German stuff. Holds a great edge, and touches up in no time.

Aha, very tricky indeed.
Leave it to the Germans and their engineers... The Mercedes Benz of knife technology. :D

They are made in the Olbertz factory in Solingen, the same factory that makes Bulldog, Indian Head, Eye Brand, Fightin Rooster, and Shapleigh's. All quality brands, including Weidmannsheil.
