I'm in the market for a locking folder and need some opinions.I would like one in high carbon steel about 3 inches long(blade) with Rubber in handle,or something that grips good.I'v been looking around some and only seem to find Stainless steel.I have a Gerber AR 3.00 and it wont hold an edge so I want to go with a good carbon,or new exotic.I really like Cold steel's carbov v steel but they dont make one with a lock blade.I also have a Buck Mayo with 440c and like it,but really want carbon. You may have guessed by now that I really want a Carbon blade. Thanks

You might check around for a Case Copperlock in CV steel. I found one a while back in an EBay store with a Wharncliffe blade and it quickly became one of my favorite knives.

Buck is going to have to put me on the payroll. since you didn't say whether you require it to be one hand opening...

I have to recommend the bucklite. the locking blade is about 3", its a utility style drop point. it is 420hc. it gets as sharp as my carbon steel knives, holds an edge 10x longer, even cutting synthetic rope, has a plastic handle, and a removeable clip. it's about 20 dollars. its a workhorse.

There is several makers offering D2 blades on folding knves - Benchmade, Microtech... Like Socome Elite is pretty nice, but expensive.

Extreme case may be Higonocami with laminated Shirogami blade for about $20

But handle is not very grippy.

However I will siggest you take advantage of moment and buy Kershaw Leek with ZDP-189 - it does not have rubber handle - titanium, but it will be hard for you to find 2% C steel blade in even tool carbon steel.

Thanks, Vassili.

Before trying to limit yourself to carbon steels, you might read Joe Talmadge's Steel FAQ. There are plenty of folders in my personal favourites: 154CM, ATS-34 and VG10.

In a folder that meets your requirements, it's hard to beat the Spyderco Delica 4. Nice, grippy FRN handle with a 3" blade of VG-10. Opens quickly and easily one-handed with the Spyderco hole.

Queen makes a Mountain Man Lockback in 1095, right? Or D2?

WELL,HELL,I like a those knives yall suggested especially the Benchmade 710,but I dont have the bucks.I saw the Bench made Pardue 530 in 440C steel I kinda like it,it may be my next Knife.I have a Buck Mayo in 440C is the Bench made blade as good.I dont care about the looks, its the functionallity,I dont wont to have to sharpen it every time I use it.I have DMT diamond stones so sharpining the thing is ok.I seem to like whats said about D2 steel but cant find the shape I want in the price range I want.I want a Blade shape in drop point, maybe a little modifyed,A pocket Clip a handle that wont slip, that will stay sharp for a reasonable amount of time(mayo or better)ITS A WORKING KNIFE,it will be punished, all for under $100.Come on boys whats the toughest one out there.

Benchmade VEX. cheap, grippy, sharp and stainless. True one hand opener and strong enough Liner Lock.

I would not judge the edge-holding performance of stainless steels based on the performance of a Gerber AR 3.00. That knife has a blade made of 440A. 440A has its strengths, but edge holding is not one of them.

Benchmade does a fine job with 440C. And 440C will hold an edge way better than 440A, as you apparently found out with the Buck Mayo. I read good things about their N690 steel offerings as well.

Spyderco also makes some nice blades in your price range in VG10. That steel also holds a good edge for a long time.

You might want to browse a couple of the web knife stores to look for a blade shape you like. Anything by Benchmade, Spyderco, etc should fill your needs for a strong, well made blade that holds an edge. Stay away from the fantasy knives.

Good hunting.

Take a look at the RAT model 1 in AUS 8. It takes and holds a wicked edge. Also a small fixed blade like the RAT3 is also a formidable option to a locking folder. It comes with either D2 or 1095.
