Looking for a Maker for my First Custom

I was wondering if the group could point me in the direction of a few quality makers for my first custom. I have a few ideas on a knife that I would want, and I could use some help finding the right individual.

In general terms, the knife would be a fixed blade 4.75" in a slightly modified drop point, with an equivalently sized handle but with a larger diameter for larger hands. I can get more specific when I start talking with the craftsman.

If the knife works out, I would more than likely want to get 2 (possible 3) more made just like it with name engraving on the blade.

I understand that custom knives will cost more, and I am willing to pay for quality.

Thanks!

Brian

If you post this question in the Makers' section, you might get a few makers to take on the project.

I would recommend Lin as well.
I think he has a 2 year wait at present.

Yes, Lins a great choice.

I would suggest spending a little time here over the next couple weeks or search past threads as the makers that post their work here are all very good, represent many styles and provide good value.

But be prepared to wait as most good custom makers are back logged.

hey brain
my name is tommy gann a knive maker you can check out my web site @ tgannknives.com and if my word interest you and maybe we can work something out. thank tgann

I think you need to be a lot more specific in your parameters.

What kind of steel do you want in your knife?

Do you want it forged or stock removal?

What are you going to use the knife for (assuming it is to use)?

How much money are you willing to spend?

Without decisions on these basics, you are going to have more questions than answers.

I have found a maker, and we are in the process of finalizing the design.

Thanks!

If it is OK, I want to hold off on saying until we have a completed deal worked out and he is OK will posting it here.

Thanks,
Brian

OK, but I'll hold you to it, enquiring minds want to know!!:D

Tom,

I uderstand and appreciate your response. Herein lies the problems though.

1) I am unsure what steel I want. I am not well versed in the available steels, and was hoping to rely on the expertise of the maker with this decision.

2) For forged or stock removal, I would have to say similar things as I did in #1

3) Here I should have been more specific. It is going to be used for field dressing large game.

4) I think how much I am willing to spend depends on what I am getting. I have found that if I say "I have x dollars to spend" when I don't know what those dollars will get me, I end up shorting myself in one way or another.

After saying all of this, I think the biggest lesson I have learned is that I should have been more specific as to the purpose of the knife. When I used to build wood boats, and now in my turnings (and software of all things), the desired use does more to dictate the rest. As a craftsman I am often guilty of expecting the customer to be as knowledgeable as I am about what I am doing.
