I have a friend in the Merchant Marine Academy who has been looking for a nice Mariner knife. It has to have a Marlin Spike on it and of course some sort of blade preferably serrated for cutting ropes. Also it needs to be at least fairly sturdy. Anyone have any ideas for a specific model? Thanks in advance.

spyderco atlantic salt h1 steel , tested one that had been left outside strapped to a lifeboat for a year ...went through some tuff rope real nice !

what's your price range?

to start you off, take a look at boye knives.

Look into the traditional patterned knives, you'll find a larger variety with marlinspikes IMO

He says price isn't of any issue but I would like to keep it under $150.

the boye folding knife with marlin spike will run about $155. you can get a cosmetically blemished model for $134.

at a lower price point (around $70-$80), check out myerchin titanium rigging knives.

here is a pic of the boye folding knives:

The Myerchin site doesn't seem to be working. Any idea of a site that would be selling them or is it time to head over to the WTB forum?

Ah I see now and a few more questions. Do you happen to know what steel the Boye is made of? And how will the two different knives do when in contact with salt water? Thanks a ton for the help.

the blade of the boye knife isn't made of steel, it's made of dendritic cobalt. it won't ever corrode from salt water.

there is one that is made by a name brand but I dont know how to spell it right.I belive the name of the knife is the marlin spike.I think it went for around $40.00

Love the myerchins :)

Reasonably priced for titanium framelocks on both the blade and spike :)

you could find a custom sheath maker and get a knife and a spike with a shakler together in same sheath (might break the budget )
