Looking for a new AXIS knife

I recently got out of a somewhat messed up relationship and want to get a new Benchmade so I have something to get excited about.

I really like AXIS locks but I only have a mini-grip right now. So I'm not looking for another griptilian. One of the most important things to me in a knife is that it is thin. There are quite a few benchmades that are fairly thick which bothers me. I would love a mini-rukus but it is thick. I got an HK and promptly sold it for the same reason. I would like something that is tip up and would prefer it not to have aluminum scales. I would like something large about 4.5" closed. Open to other sizes but nothing huge or really small.

I was thinking a 710 or maybe a Kulgera. Does anyone have any other recommendations? A picture showing the thickness compared to other knives or even just a measurement would be great if you do have a suggestion. I wish knife makers would put this measurement in knife descriptions but no one does.

Thanks!

Ryan

I think you would really enjoy a Benchmade 930. VERY SMOOTH and nice for EDC! GOOD LUCK! Kevin

Go on and get the 710, you won´t be dissapointed. Actually when I got mine in the mail I said to myself "is this wat all the fuss is about?" It didnt strike me as the God of knives. I just came from a Eider down picking trip in the islands and the knife came to life. It is excacly as good as they say. It is now my favorite, also from the fact I had underestimated it so severly in the beginning.

I have handled a 530 and while it is very thin and disappears in your pocket I guess it didn't feel very 'robust.' The thin FRN felt flimsy and it didn't seem like the pivot was smooth or maybe the blade was not very heavy. I like to flick my AXIS knives a lot and that model did not seem like a good one to do that.

The 930 Kulgera looks nice. Could someone measure how thick it is?

I like a wider blade than the 930 or 710 but thats just me being picky. The mini-rukus and HK 14205 are just about perfect but just too thick for my tastes. Well I am assuming the 14205 is. I have handled the 14200 and I guess I am assuming it is the same knife except with different handle materials. If anyone could measure the thickness of a 14205 it would be appreciated.

Thanks for the replies and keep 'em coming!

ill have to reccomend the 710 as well, when i got it in the mail i was like - WOW, so this is what all the fuss is about. truely a perfect knife if there is one.

You cant go wrong with either the 710 or the 930 they are both amazing knives. But if you like wider bladed knives i am not sure if benchmade makes them that thin.

If you want a smaller, much lighter version of the 710, check out the 707. It's really thin and a great package for a 3" blade.

Yeah, check out the 707. The blade is also more wide compared to the handle than the 710. Sounds like what you are looking for.

I forgot that one, if you like the 710 but want something smaller, the 707 is a winner!

+1 on the 707. You might think it's too small until the 3" 154cm blade's flicked open. Great EDC utility knife that has a lot of strength along with a slim profile.

Not sure if you mean thin handle or thin blade profile, but the 710 measures a hair under 1/2 inch in handle thickness. The blade measures about 1 inch at the widest area behind thumbstud.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm talking about handle thickness. Thanks for the measurement. I guess I was imagining it being a little thinner than that. Sounds like its about the same dimensions as a kershaw Lahar which is a pretty substantial knife.

Could anyone give me a handle thickness measure of the Kulgera and the 14205 and even the mini rukus if its not too much trouble. It would be greatly appreciated!!! Its hard buying knives when you aren't able to handle them first.

What would be about the cheapest, but good quality, axis or arc lock? Doesn't have to be Benchmade but I would love to get such a smooth knife like that at a decent price.

A Benchmade griptilian would be your best bet. It is going to be the cheapest Benchmade with AXIS lock you will find. Not sure about the ARC lock but you might as well get the original. Plus I would be willing to bet you will find much more positive experiences with the griptilians than any SOG. You can probably find one in the $60 range if you look around.

Another vote for the 710, or 707 if you want a smaller blade. I recently bought a large Sebenza and loved it, so I decided to order a small one to complement it. When it came, I compared it to my Benchmade 707. Almost exactly the same blade size, handle size and blade profile. The Sebenza has a great lock, but the Axis lock is top drawer as well. I ended up returning the small Sebenza and gained a whole new appreciation for my 707. And at $93.75 vs. $330, the 707 really looks good. A sweet, sweet piece of steel, that 707. And the 710, I looked at it a lot over the past few years and couldn't figure out, as lorise said, what all the fuss was about. Then I ordered one. It is truly the standard to which all others are compared. You can't go wrong with either of these. As far as thicknesses go, I measured my 707 and 710 with the dial caliper and they measure .39 and .49 respectively.

Thanks for the measurements! That 707 does look nice but it is almost exactly the same size as a mini-grip. I wish it was just a tad bit longer and I would be sold on it.

The 530 is my EDC and has remained so for the three years since I first purchased it, and I've acquired a good many more knives in those years. The 530 remains my favorite knife.
