Ok guys, I have a folding knife class that I am doing the end of March, and I want the best folder I can buy, for carry and combat with a folder. I already own an Emerson Karambit, love it but need something more practical to user after my class. What is going to be my best folder, I love the wave assisted opener on the Emerson’s so I was wanting to stick with that, and the quality of the Emerson is great. I have been looking at the black commander, plain blade, and the CQC-8, black plain blade.

All input on this would be most helpful.

Thanks Guys.

:)

If I were you I would go with the black Commander, plain blade that you just mentioned. You are familiar with Emerson and you like the "Wave" feature. Go for it.

They all are great. I guess it is a matter of choice on the blade shape.

I like my SOCFK, it fits great in my hand. If you have a big hand, then the Super SOCFK might be the choice.

naw, get the cqc8 man trust me .actually get any of em there are all good . ive got a cqc8 and im kinda partial to it thats all.

I find the CQC8 to be a great utility blade shape so much more useful for a variety of chores than say a Commander with a recurve.

Just what will the CQC8 do that the Commander with the recurved blade will not do, assuming both of them have smooth edges (no serrations) ?

Blade style is a lot of personal preference - my personal preference for blade is to have a nice point and I like a long straight cutting surface with a belly, hence my preference for the 8 blade. (For the record I don't like tantos for utility.)

For comparisons I'd say the 8 is a better penetrator. The long flat straight gives me much more control for say slicing or whittling type work - altho I can appreciate some people would prefer a recurve say for rope cutting.

The 8 is easier to sharpen on a stone and get the right angles since it's mostly straight edge with a belly at the tip. For the Commander you'll need a rod based system.

The 8 is certainly no slouch in the slashing department either!

test both the cqc8 and the commander in a stab test on a big city phone book. youll see the diference i promise.both are good knives though .

10 gets my vote. Blade is, as stated above, a very useful shape for general utility purposes.

Very Helfull guy's. I have been looking at the CQC-11 now because of all the talk about the 8 and 10 on how usefull they are, so why not add a little length to them.

Thats where I am leaning to. But again very helpfull, Thanks

I have an 8 and an 11 and they are so close in size I woulden't base your choise on that. I like the 8 better because of the aggressive blade style. It looks alot meaner than the 11. Both handles feel really nice but the 8 feels just a little bit better to me. I think if you choose either one you'll be happy, there both awesome knives. Maybe you should just flip a coin or buy both. my 2cents

Those are some cool knives, but that doesn't make them better.

Airkat's Apache (survival knife) is very cool though :D

I've ended up selling every strider I've ever bought, for how much they cost they should be twice as goos as an Emerson and I'd trust any one of my Emersons over a strider any day. Aircats are really cool looking and I assume there great knives, but the odds of actually finding one in stock somewhere, let alone the one you're looking for are slim to none.

though excellent knives some striders are just a little big for EDC carry, for me anyway, the SnG and SmF are both great folders and carry well too.

the airkats look cool but i have never handled one so cant say anything pro/con.

of the emerson stuff i would vote for the CQC8 or CQC12 myself and prefer them by a small margin to the striders..

i carry different emersons - mini commander , hd-7, full size commander
mini cqc7 " a " blade i like the cqc 8 but its a big knife and it does not fit well in my pocket also cqc 13 is to big for my pocket.

I carry a CQC7 and it continues to perform flawlessly. I love this knife and would never get rid of it. I recently bought a Commander and a CQC8 to try out as well, just for something bigger. I also have the PSARK. I love them all and they all serve different functions. I'd go with Emerson hands down...just be sure to have some blister cream and bandaids on hand for your thumb (EKI liners are VERY stiff and tight when brand new, and it takes alot of breaking in to get them smooth and by that point, you may need to amputate your thumb. just kidding). I would go with the wave feature if I had a choice, but it is not necessary.

Yeah I went to a shop and handled 20 SNG's and SMF's and they all had off center blades and the framelock wasn't engaging the best. Picked up a few emersons (HD-7, CQC-12) and they were much better finished and half the price.....
