hey guys, I'm fairly of new to the world of knives, not that I'm new to having and carrying one, just new to having any kind of knowledge about what I'm carrying and actually having it sharp, about a year ago I took an interest in blacksmithing and that lead to more of an interest in what kind of knife I was actually using. still haven't tried blacksmithing, I've just recently been able to really put any knowledge of knives to use due to my lack of cash. but that's all beside the point.

recently I've been carrying a buck 143 paklite skinner, I was a bit apprehensive at about carrying a fixed blade because Missouri law says I can't conceal it, but I soon found that with it on my belt and the bottom half hanging below my shirt people don't notice it, maybe that's because I wear black jeans and it blends in but I suspect people just don't use their eyes, most of my friends don't even realize I've got it until they ask if anybody has a knife. and I swear if one more person looks at it and ask if it's a throwing knife I'm going to take about 6 steps back and ask if they want to find out (not that I would ever actually do that, but it sounds like a good idea sometimes) but anyway I'm straying off topic.

college starts back in a few weeks and while most people are oblivious to it I don't like the idea of walking around campus with this knife on my belt, you know how colleges are about "weapons" but loads of guys carry folders and I often found myself using mine right out in the open or even in class (electronics major, knifes can be handy) and nobody cared, might have something to do with it being a small town community college.

anyway last semester I was carrying one of these http://www.amazon.com/Terminator-Salvation-Folding-Knife-Black/dp/B002DPT6KU that I was given for Christmas, I was actually almost surprised by the knife, it was reasonable sharp out of the box, though not shaving sharp, and held a working edge the entire time I had it, I had no sharpening system at the time (now using a Gatco) and cannot free hand to save my life so I was actually quite glad that it held a useable edge. however by june I had broken the tip off the blade and put a chip in it, the pocket clip didn't want to stay tight, and the blade wiggled more than I would have liked. and then I took it out of my pocket at my sisters house and it got lost. but there was a lot about this knife that I liked and I'm hoping to find a similar one that is of a higher quality.

I liked the frame lock, after having a cheap made liner lock slip up on me I felt secure having the extra width of the metal there along with how simple the design looked. the problem with a lot of frame lock knives I see however is the pocket clip is on the bottom of the knife, I don't like the idea of having the knife upside down in my pocket, I just imagine it accidentally opening and slicing up my hand. plus being left handed it only makes drawing the knife that much more awkward.

I also liked the general size and shape of the blade, I think this one hit it about perfect for me at 3 1/8", not too big, not too small.

I liked the double thumb stud, one on each side. I don't really like the thumb hole idea and being left handed most knifes with only one stud are a problem for me.

and while I don't know if it's common or not, the knife had a magnet in the handle of it that held the blade closed good and firmly, this wasn't flipping out unless I wanted it to. but with the simplest flick of my thumb it snapped open

I liked the fact that the handle was completely metal with some raised designs on it, made for good grip while keeping it simple.

so basically I'm looking for a 3 - 3.5" knife with a frame lock, no other materials but metal on the handle, preferably with some sort of raised bits for good grip though. with the pocket clip covering the lock. preferably some sort of clip point on the blade. thumb stud on both sides, stays closed well but opens effortlessly. only this time made out of a decent steel and a little better quality design (to avoid the wiggling blade issue)

and I'm hoping to keep it fairly cheep, I don't want something I'm gonna be afraid to carry everyday, I'm looking at maybe $50 or under?

oh, and while it's far from a requirement, black would be nice, I love black haha

sorry for being so long winded.

of course that's not a final word, feel free to suggest any knife you think I might enjoy even if it doesn't meet all of this.

Take a look at a Kershaw Knockout or a Kershaw Blur. Both have aluminum handles (the Blur has grippy inserts) and are in the 3-3.5" blade range. They are both assisted openers but the Blur can be de-assisted easily and works extremely well that way. The Knockout cannot be de-assisted. They can both be had in your price range if you shop around (check here on the exchange). They use Sandvik steel that has decent edge retention and is very easy to maintain.

Okay maybe you should get an upgrade from that terminator salvation. :) I prefer to carry what many people tell me are large folders. I never exceed four inches on the blade though. My knife is also fully black haha. I am attracted to tactical knives so black is usually a must for me. I carry one of these.

Never had a more dependable blade. It has NO blade play. If a blade wiggles I WILL NOT carry it. My knife is shaving sharp and holds a respectable edge. I recommend you look into Cold Steel's line of knives for something more dependable, most of their folding knives are black too haha. Around fifty dollars? Go on Amazon and the smaller version of the knife I carry is right under fifty dollars! The larger one may be too big for your taste and the mini version has a two and three fourths inch blade length.

Just recommending something I have used :) Maybe someone can find something better but that knife is hard to beat! By the way, it is not a liner lock knife it has the triad lock which I recommend! Hope you find a good knife and reply back when you get one!

I also own an AK-47 and I highly recommend it. The one and only bad thing I have to say about it is that the pocket clip will only accept thin fabrics. It's an awesome, awesome folder and I truly enjoy using and carrying it. One of the sharpest folders I've ever gotten out of box with a super thin edge and awesome geometry. The ergonomics are fantastic, and that Tri-Ad lock is totally BA.

That patented thumb plate allows you to open the knife like normal, or wave it off of your pocket, something the AK-47 does super reliably.

Welcome to the world of knife buying. Prepare thy self!

Okay:
3-3.5 inch blade
Frame lock
Metal handle
Thumb studs
Easy opener
Better quality design
$50

Kershaw Cryo II all day long. Meets every single one of those.

can the assisted opening on the Cryo II be removed? I've never been a fan of them simply because I don't understand why I would need my knife to open faster than I can flick it manually, but maybe it just takes some getting used to.

anyway the Cryo and the ak-47 both look pretty good to me and I'm liable to end up with both eventually but I'll probably get a Cryo first since it's a bit cheaper. I think I'll end up spending a little more for a full sized ak-47 eventually, as a 2 3/4" sounds actually a little small to me.

on the flip side, the cryo II appears to only come in this gray color, where as the original cryo comes in black, so I'm debating if a 2 3/4" blade would be big enough for me. they really need to be making a black cryo II

Most decent blades will have a detent that keeps it closed without you wanting to have it open. The Terminator knife was using a magnet, this is not how it should be done.

Kershaw Ram has 3 thumb studs! Maybe this will work for you?

well, I think it was a magnet anyway, I may be wrong, just sort of once the blade was inside the handle it sort of sucked itself 100% closed and, even if you intentionally tried to shake it open it wasn't going anywhere until you moved the blade directly. but then, I figure if it was a decent blade it would have lasted me more than half a year.

Although these do not meet your requirements, I would say go for one of these: Kershaw Skyline/Injection/Cryo, Spyderco Delica. My personal favorite out of these is the Skyline.

Cryo II, another one to look at is the Kershaw Thermite though it has g10 handles, it's another rick hinderer knife like the Cryo's and from the looks of it appears to be another solid knife.

Cryo II it is, I'll be picking one up when I get payed in a couple weeks. then I'll start making a priority list of all these other awesome knives I want.

well I ran my car off the road and as such cut my paycheck down by about 100 bux (glad there wasn't more damage) so in an effort to save a little cash I decided to go with the original Cryo rather than the Cryo II, I think this may actually be a better choice for me for a few reasons. first is I've never carried an assisted open knife before and if I don't like it I'm not out as much, but also it's going to be a little more manageable in my pocket and not as intimidating as the 3.5" blade when I use it at school, I ordered a black Cryo from amazon yesterday, should be in sometime this week, I'll let ya'll know what I think, not that you really need my opinion lol.
