hey guys, I'm fairly of new to the world of knives, not that I'm new to having and carrying one, just new to having any kind of knowledge about what I'm carrying and actually having it sharp, about a year ago I took an interest in blacksmithing and that lead to more of an interest in what kind of knife I was actually using. still haven't tried blacksmithing, I've just recently been able to really put any knowledge of knives to use due to my lack of cash. but that's all beside the point.
recently I've been carrying a buck 143 paklite skinner, I was a bit apprehensive at about carrying a fixed blade because Missouri law says I can't conceal it, but I soon found that with it on my belt and the bottom half hanging below my shirt people don't notice it, maybe that's because I wear black jeans and it blends in but I suspect people just don't use their eyes, most of my friends don't even realize I've got it until they ask if anybody has a knife. and I swear if one more person looks at it and ask if it's a throwing knife I'm going to take about 6 steps back and ask if they want to find out (not that I would ever actually do that, but it sounds like a good idea sometimes) but anyway I'm straying off topic.
college starts back in a few weeks and while most people are oblivious to it I don't like the idea of walking around campus with this knife on my belt, you know how colleges are about "weapons" but loads of guys carry folders and I often found myself using mine right out in the open or even in class (electronics major, knifes can be handy) and nobody cared, might have something to do with it being a small town community college.
anyway last semester I was carrying one of these http://www.amazon.com/Terminator-Salvation-Folding-Knife-Black/dp/B002DPT6KU that I was given for Christmas, I was actually almost surprised by the knife, it was reasonable sharp out of the box, though not shaving sharp, and held a working edge the entire time I had it, I had no sharpening system at the time (now using a Gatco) and cannot free hand to save my life so I was actually quite glad that it held a useable edge. however by june I had broken the tip off the blade and put a chip in it, the pocket clip didn't want to stay tight, and the blade wiggled more than I would have liked. and then I took it out of my pocket at my sisters house and it got lost. but there was a lot about this knife that I liked and I'm hoping to find a similar one that is of a higher quality.
I liked the frame lock, after having a cheap made liner lock slip up on me I felt secure having the extra width of the metal there along with how simple the design looked. the problem with a lot of frame lock knives I see however is the pocket clip is on the bottom of the knife, I don't like the idea of having the knife upside down in my pocket, I just imagine it accidentally opening and slicing up my hand. plus being left handed it only makes drawing the knife that much more awkward.
I also liked the general size and shape of the blade, I think this one hit it about perfect for me at 3 1/8", not too big, not too small.
I liked the double thumb stud, one on each side. I don't really like the thumb hole idea and being left handed most knifes with only one stud are a problem for me.
and while I don't know if it's common or not, the knife had a magnet in the handle of it that held the blade closed good and firmly, this wasn't flipping out unless I wanted it to. but with the simplest flick of my thumb it snapped open
I liked the fact that the handle was completely metal with some raised designs on it, made for good grip while keeping it simple.
so basically I'm looking for a 3 - 3.5" knife with a frame lock, no other materials but metal on the handle, preferably with some sort of raised bits for good grip though. with the pocket clip covering the lock. preferably some sort of clip point on the blade. thumb stud on both sides, stays closed well but opens effortlessly. only this time made out of a decent steel and a little better quality design (to avoid the wiggling blade issue)
and I'm hoping to keep it fairly cheep, I don't want something I'm gonna be afraid to carry everyday, I'm looking at maybe $50 or under?
oh, and while it's far from a requirement, black would be nice, I love black haha
sorry for being so long winded.
