Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a new finishing stone to take the place of my current Japanese combo water stone 1000/6000. The reason being, I am tired of dealing with resurfacing the stone each time and the mess that goes with it. I feel I can turn a 20-30 minute process into a 5-10 by switching to something else. I like the cutting qualities of the stone, but I am also aware that it is just a cheap stone.

I also have a 220 Norton stone though there is no issue with this one since I don't need to use it nearly as much, when I do it is usually a long process anyway.

That being said I'm looking for something under the $50 range that can be used dry and does a great job with light sharpening and refining of an edge to the point where I can finish the job on my strop with green compound.

If you know of some just over this price range that would just blow my mind let me know.

Thanks for you help,

for years i used a piece of glass and some 3m wetordry sandpaper to sharpe on and it worked great. you can buy a lot of sandpaper for $50. :D

if you want to turn a 5-10 minute job into a 1-2 minute job check out the paper wheels. you might have a little more than $50. getting set up but if you want to save time and get knives razor sharp check out the paper wheels. here is a thread i started on them. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578787

Richard J, paper wheels have interested me in some time. Where is the best information on getting started?

A lot of this depends on your definition of a finishing stone. 6000 grit waterstone is approx 1500 grit wet/dry or just a bit more refined than a 1200 grit DMT EF. That said, for dry sharpening I'd say go with a DMT EF or a Norton India stone. I use both with a bit of soapy water, but many others use them dry as a biscuit.

You could also get a system together for faster lapping of your waterstones. I have a bunch of different stones, but my waterstones get the nod more often than not. Any inconvenience they cause upfront is more than made up for with the quality of the edge they produce, amount of user feedback, and the fact they produce in my hands, a much smaller burr (and I'm talking about the lowly King variety). I can reliably remove 100% of the burr on a waterstone regardless of steel type, something I cannot do with any of my other stones except for the diamond plates.

i have been using them for the past 20 years. anything you want to know about them i'm the guy to talk to but you can read my thread too.
i wish i had found out about them long ago. check out the vids at my website of knives i sharpened on the wheels. i aslo have a few short vids of me working up a burr on a knife. removing the burr takes about the same length of time.

You might consider the Chosera 5k, if you're willing to go a bit over $50. Finish is better than my King 8k. From that chosera, I can go to a pasted strop and easily hair whittle every time. (Assuming I don't bother with my finer natural water stones)
