Looking for a new fixed blade any ideas?

I have a few knives in mind like the: Swamp rat- Desert Camp Tramp, Post- drop point skinner, Timberline-Zambezi and the Becker-BK-7.

any info on any of these knives would be great or another knife you might recommend.

Thanks

The becker bk-7 is a great knife, and I would take a look at kabar knives and the buck 119.

Can you give everyone an idea of what you are going to do with your new knife?

I have a black Camp Tramp, and absolutely love it! The Desert is simply a different color. It balances out well, and is a lot more knife than you can feel. I have beat the snot out of this knife, and it just holds up.

The wear on the finish is normal, and many do not like this. I feel it adds character to the blade, however. It also lets someone know it is a user real quick.

I have never owned the others, but have held the Becker in Desert tan. That is on knife I do love, I have just been spending my knife money on Rats.

I cannot comment on the Timberline. I don't recall having ever seen one.

Also, I don't know about the warranty on the others, but the Swamp Rat warranty is very good. The downside to the Camp Tramp is the price at around $135, and the wait.

Let us know what you decide on, and post some pics.

Edited to add - I think the Desert CT is going to run closer to $160, and I have never heard of the Post.

The new knife will be mostly used for camp use, and cuttin kindling, rope, fishing line and the odd animal skinning.

And the post knife is a knife made by Ron Post- hes based in canada so not alot of people know about him, but the people have have talked to just love them.

I'll probably get flamed for suggesting this, but I've always been surprised that the Cold Steel All Terrain Hunter never gets mentioned here. I kind of think of it as the American equivalent of the Mora. It's got a very thin blade (1/10th") and a very ergonomic rubber handle, as well as a decent carbon blade in a very practical shape, and coated as well. The sheath isn't anything that you'd want to write home to Mom about, but it does the job and helps keep the price low. Just don't try to pry with it.

I can understand why some wouldn't buy it because of the name, but look at some of the Camillus knives, especially the handles, and draw your own conclusions.

You could spend several times more and end up with quite a bit less, in my opinion.

I have handled the Zambezi, the Becker and the Swamp Rat. The Zambezi feels more like a combat type knife, one that could be a weapon in a pinch. On the other hand, the Becker and the Rat are pure survival/outdoors blades. Out of the two, I would go for the Swamp Rat, primarily for the awesome handle. Not to mention the great h/t, and the lifetime warrenty. I found that the Becker handles were too thick.

I have had great luck with a smaller knife as far as the chores you have listed. If you are still interested in the Swamp Rats, might I suggest a smaller version like the Howling Fat, or Howling Rat? They are less expensive.

Becker also has smaller knives that would do those chores well.

That is a nice knife Mr. Post has made. If you get one I would love to see pics.

The Camp Tramp has more forward weight to it and is better at chopping than the BK7 which has a more neutral balance. My BK7 also has a thinner edge than the Tramp, not to say that the edge of the Tramp is thick, just thicker. The handle of the Tramp is very comfortable with shock and heavy contacts from chopping or battoning. Both sheaths are basic, the Becker sheath is pretty much crap.

A nice option is that you can contact Camillus and order a set of micarta scales from their Extreme line that bolt right up to the standard Becker series for a nice upgrade.

Also check out the Ranger Knives RD series, very good knife for the money. Justin is a great guy to deal with and will make things right for you. Any more questions just ask :)
