Looking for a new Knife (a Spyderco)

Hi everybody,

I currently own the Al Mar Sere 2000 Folder (Shaprened Edge length of 3 and 5/16 inches) and the CRK M16-04Z (sharpened edge length of 3 and 7/8 inches). These are my two EDCs right now. While the AlMar is the best blade I have ever handled I find myself wanting a larger knife. While it doesn't sound like it on paper, the CRK is a substentially larger knife. Much heavier and just feels much larger then the numbers would make you believe.

I already decided that I want a spyderco (no reason, just want to try them) with a traditional blade shape. All of the spyderco knifes seem to be smaller then the AlMar (). With the exception of the Military. The military has a cutting edge of 3.687" which is smaller then the 3.875" of the CRKT and larger then the 3.3125" of the AlMar.

While teh CRKT and the Military are about the same overall length. I worry a bit that the military will feel small in the hand. Is there a larger Spyderco, with a traditional blade shape, that I missed? And for those of you that have the military, can you comment on my observations? It is difficult not being able to look at the knife before purchasing.

Thanks Everybody.

If you haven't tried a leaf shape blade go for it. Manix 2 XL sound like it could be great for you. Handle won't seem small or narrow.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had looked at the Manix 2 XL before. I was worried about the locking mechanism, it looks very delicate. Also seems as though dirt could defeat that lock quickly. The Manix is also smaller (on paper) then the military. But I don't know how they woudl compare in hand.

Wow, I seem to have missed that knife. That does seem nice and large :D. So now I need to decide between VG10 and CPM S30V. I am told spyderco does an excelent S30V and my AlMar is already in VG10.

Any donations so I can buy both? :P

There's also the Ulize, with 3.92" of edge, and the Szabo Folder with 3.97". Of course, if you like really big knives, you may want to hold off for the Tatanka. It will give you a whopping 4.55" of edge. :D

Spyderco makes a bulletproof ball bearing lock. I was skeptical when I first handled it, but you can easily close with 1 hand. My Manix2 locks up solid every time.

If you want a longer blade than the Al Mar, try the Ulize or the Police, both are over 4". The Starmate is substantial but about the same length.

Thanks for those suggestions. I don't like the blade shape of the Ulize and Szabo. And the Tatanka isn't full flat grind, a feature I would really like to experience. Other then that, the Tatanka looks nice :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence. The Manix2 XL looks very nice.

The Starmate looks like an incredible knife. Might have to buy that one if I like the Spyderco quality. So many options, so little money :D

I worry a bit that the military will feel small in the hand.

That is definitely not a complaint I have EVER heard anyone make about the Millie. Don't worry, unless you are Andre the Giant, it won't! :D
Also, the cbb lock on the manix xl is very strong. I would venture it could handle more abuse than a RIL.

If there is anyway you can handle a Military in person, I would recommend it. The Military is a big knife, so much so that a lot of people won't buy it or carry it. It also has a larger handle than the 4" blade/3.687" cutting edge would suggest.

The Military is too large for EDC for me. You might try a smaller knife since you have 2 large ones. Just a thought.

The Wayne Goddard Sprint Run from 2013 is awesome and still available on the site named for a large river. Just the size and light and thin but tough. Front lock.

Stretch is also a killer with a unique blade shape. Name says it all.
Back lock.

If you like the al mar quality, IIIC, the starmate is made by the same factory.
