looking for a new knife

Hi all. I was looking around the internets yesterday and I came across a certain Cold Steel product, the SRK. I love how this knife looks and the obligatory Cold Steel video about it didn't help either. But when I was looking at it, I found that it is now made in aus8a instead of carbon v. That's a bit of a deal breaker.

So I found another knife, the Fallkniven A1. Same looks, better steel... higher price. A bit too pricey for me.

So I was wondering if you guys had any idea of a knife that has the same looks as these two for a good price with a good steel. Around 80 bucks or less is about as much as I'd like to spend.

Here's a picture (courtesy of TSA Knives blog) of the two:

I say just get over the price tag and buy the A1, You will not be disappointed!
Fallkniven make some outstanding knives and to tell you the truth. If you buy a knife that looks similar for $80 you may well end up wishing you'd just gone for the high quality version in the first place.

As much as I'd like to own the Fallkniven, as I know they make great stuff (my buddy has an f1) I'm one of them "poor college students." I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I could without breakning the bank. Heck, 80 is pushing it. :p (someone help me beat this addiction...)

There's the benchmade CSK II.

Thanks, I'll check it out in a bit.

Dude, pony up for the Fallkniven. Money comes and goes, but awesome knives are for life! :D

If $80 is your budget and that's the knife you want why let AUS8 bother you? It used to be considered a good steel, of course, I'm not familiar with CS's heat treat, so... So what if you have to sharpen it more often?

With that kind of budget, I don't know what you're hoping for? You could probably get a better steel for that price if you're willing to go for something used on the exchange. Personally, I'd save up or go used for that type of knife. That size and potential usage begs for quality. I'm more concerned with things like stress risers and handle attachment than the AUS8.

I knew this was a bad idea to ask a forum full of fellow knife addicts. You guys are gonna keep pushing until I just buy the fallkniven anyway! :p

Let me know what you think of this!
You're in for a treat :D

Now that's a nice knife! Too shiney for me to use though. Funny thing is, I just bought a Ranger RD4 yesterday. Might decide to return it for an RD6 instead. Can't wait for it to get here.

I guess this topic is moot now because I somehow convinced myself to save my money instead of buying a new knife... again. :o Thanks for the suggestions though!

have u looked at the SOG seal elite, or sog seal pup?

also i own a HEAVY BOWIE kabar fixed blade.. dosn't look too much like these but sorta similar... its GREAT... LIGHTWIEGHT espeically for how big it is, and great wood chopping capabilities.... i went camping last week and took it into the brush with me... and i was out on a hike.. and didn't have my axe with me, was at camp so i had the heavy bowie in my bag and wanted to test it out... so chopped a tree down with it... problly around 15-20 foot tree... and diamter maybe 9-12 inches... i thought it chopped pretty well ;), got through it with around 10-15 swings... definetly a knife to consider bro...

P.S. used the wood as fire-wood that night :D

Rusty - for future reference, CS really does do a pretty decent job of heat treat with AUS8.
It's not a supersteel, but it'll take and hold a decent edge and it's pretty tough.
Lotta bang for the buck in that knife.
OTOH, nothing wrong with an RD6, either. 5160 is good stuff.
So is 1095 and the ESEE6 comes with a very versatile sheath, is made in the USA, and has a warranty you can't beat. (price splits the difference between the SRK & A1, too)

Get an ESEE RC 6 breat knife, it can take a beating and the company offers a superior warranty.

Agreed, Carbon V is/was a favorite but AUS 8 has been very effective for me. I prefer it over many other steels. But what the manufacturer does with any steel is considerably more important than the specifics of a steel-within reasonable limits.

If you can't work around the budget limitations I believe the SRK is likely to provide years of good service.

Perhaps you can find a Carbon V SRK on the secondary market, ebay and such.

Good luck.

hmm, depending on what taks you need, as once ive experianced a few chippings in my blade... the blade was AUS8... along with a few small spots of rust =S i think there might be a tad much carbon placed in the steel... to stiff not as flexible as others possibly.. (put in lamens terms) some of you might know steels well and know exactly what im talking about =p
