Hey Guys,

I'm thinking about buying a new fixed blade.

Criteria concerning the knife:

Purpose: Utility-Outdoor-Survival-Allround...

Price: about 100 bucks, maybe a little bit more but less would be ok too :)

Steel: Stainless or High-Carbon...haven'T made my mind up so far

Handles: Something synthetic like rubber or better: micarta...no bones or wood

Blade Length: I'd prefer a blade under 4,8 inches (due to legal reasons) but if the knife is a "must" maybe more than 4,8 inches would be ok.

Knives that fit this category but are already in my possession:
rat rc-4, tops mil spie 3, fallkniven f1, linder super edge 1, kizlyar sterkh, fox pro hunter.

Knives I have considered for this job but hesitated to buy for some reasons:
Ontario RD4, Ontario TAK 1, Benchmade CSKII, Becker Companion, Fallkniven S1

I'd like to hear some experience based suggestions from you guys. Pics would be nice too :). I appreciate your advices and hopefully some new ideas/suggestions as well.

Cheers,
J5

I just picked up a BK 2 over the weekend. What a stout little knife. (got a BK 9 too :D) but the 2 is a little fireplug of a knife. It actually feels heavier than the 9 - Blade is thicker. $55 bucks for the 2 and $65 of the 9 ... $ well spent.

With the list of other knives you have, you will really like the BK 2. It's Different the the others you list. If your's are Ferraris and the Becker is a
'57 Chevy with a 502 (LOL)

thanks dude...actually the thickness of bk2 - as well as the thickness of the rd4 - is what keeps me from buying...not that i don't like thick blades but this knife isn't for show. i want to use it...maybe use it for food preparation. do you think a bk2 can handle this task?
btw: where di you get this knife for 55$??

Swamp Rat Howling Rat at 128 dollars. The RAT/ESEE 4's handle pales in comparison to the Howling Rat, and it offers better edge retention. Fit and finish are on par. Ergonomics, 2-3 times better. This is the most comfortable synthetic handle knife that I own. Blade is 4.5 inches. Overall the blade profile is extremely similar to the RATs, though it is saber ground.

Amazon $54.99 (LOL)

Food Prep ? Not so much with a the BK 2. I mean it will do it, but a little Mora for $14 is a great
camp knife for that. (love mine)

Tell ya though, if it isn't a big deal, the BK 2 is nice knife. Just a beast of a beater knife.

Thanks PayetteRucker for your suggestion,

I'd love to get hold of a swamp rat. The thing is that I need a knife that is available at any time and almost ubiquitous - at least at some online stores. If there is a store that sells them please let me know.

The Swamp Rat Company store has them both available now-I believe the Howling Rat is 128 dollars and the RatManDu is 134 dollars. The RMD is currently in production and last info was there isn't a plan to stop. The Howling Rat run is done but there are leftovers that you can buy now.
