Looking for a new sharpener

I am in a market for a new sharpening system that is around the $40-$50 range. I have a spyderco sharp maker, but this can not make a factory edge. It simply refines the factory bevel. What I need is a sharpening system that would get an extremely dull knife to a factory edge. Then, I can use the sharp maker to refine it. The wicked edge pro seems like the ideal system, but there are two problems I have with it:

1) It is too expensive
2) It seems redundant to manually with the different stones

To solve the second problem, I am looking for an adjustable angle guide electronic sharpener. I understand this takes a significant amount of metal off, but so does the wicked edge. I believe the electron sharpener would be faster and efficient. The smith's electronic sharpening system with the adjustment knob appeals to me, but it is too expensive for me. The Presto EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener might be what I am looking for, but the angle adjustment only has three settings: thin, medium, and thick.

Does anyone else have any experience with the an adjustable angle guide electric sharpener that they can recommend to me? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

My grandfather used to use an electric sharpener. It wasn't adjustable, but the odd thing was that he would touch up his pocket knife all the time on it, and it would make the blade edge concave after awhile. I actually inherited a Barlow about 30 years ago from this process. Let me know if you'd like to see a picture of it.

I think you are in a hard boat to get out of. Most of these electric sharpeners you are looking at will pretty much chew up your blades and leave them in worse shape than before you used the sharpener. True, they will somewhat sharpen your blade, but the edge will look like a fine saw blade when done.
For the amount of money you want to spend, I would get a Norton India stone and a DMT aligner for angle control if you can not hold a constant angle by hand. The Lansky is a good budget system, and will give you a good constant edge bevel with practice. Also the Work Sharp Knife and Tool sharpener is a good device for about $60 - $$70. Any of these will give you good results with a little practice. Get you some old kitchen knives to practice on until you can get the results you want. Good luck

Blessings,

Omar
