Looking for a nice fixed blade

Well, I've got something of a "problem." I've been hunting the internet for a great folder. But in my quest, I realized something: they're too small :o

So now, I need a decent, inexpensive fixed blade. Nothing amazing, somewhere around $50 hopefully. I know plenty of folders and makers, but no fixed blades, so I'm turning to you guys.

Nothing good is going to come of me having an 8 inch knife, but damned if I don't want one :D

Check out Bark River K&T and Ragweed Forge. I recently picked up Roselli's carpenter's knife for a lightweight, totally functional cutting tool.

Kabar impact series are sweet blades, tough and not expensive to boot.A great all around package.

There was a great topic a couple of weeks ago, "$40 fixed blade", or something. Lots of great knives in that price range.

Best Wishes,
Bob

It seems to me like you may want to think about your purchase a little more.

There are plenty of folders in that size range, they're not all "too small." Folders come in all shapes and sizes. In fact, I have some folders that are larger than some of my fixed blades.

What are you planning to use it for? This affects your decision, and our recommendations. General utility? Hunting & skinning? Camping/woodcraft?

And why do you think that "Nothing good is going to come of me having an 8 inch knife?"

Peace.

Check out Cold Steel and Becker. Excellent fixed blades in your price range. Check out KaBar as well...

I am looking for a knife for general utility and camping/woodcraft. After considerating the size a bit more, I believe a blade <6" would be best, probably in the area of 4/4.5 inches for convienience.

I really like that Kabar Impact, although the Buck 119 seems nice too.

If you know of any folders with a larger blade and decent weight (I can't stand a knife without a little weight to it... which may be why I am turning to fixed blades.) Point it out, I'd be glad to see it. I don't like Spyderco knives, though, they look terrible IMO, even if they are good knives.

And as for "Nothing good is going to come of me having an 8 inch knife" I mean that it gives me a lot of room for error, and I will probably nick myself a few times before I get used to the size of the blade.

My Buck 120 is still available on some sites I think. I like it better than the 119 because it is a bit bigger. A 7.5" blade on it makes a big diff with certain tasks but isn't noticed much when carrying it.

Rat-3 get my vote - d2 steel, great sheath with clip and tec-lock, very usable knife. about 70, but a real keeper. I polished mine. (see recent thread)

It sounds like a Ka-bar to me. Also if you decide against Ka-bar the Becker's such as the BK7 are good espicially IMO for camping.

This is not a <6" blade, neither is the Buck 119. The CS Master Hunter is 4.5" which is the length and price you are looking for, and a good blade for camping/utility chores.

Get one of the Benchmade "Rant" knives...440C steel the way Benchmade does 440C steel is pretty darn good.
