Just received this in the mail yesterday...

sheath.jpg

And while I have a Swamp Rat that fits nicely in it, this sheath begs for a short 'n sweet fixed blade to call home.

While I've checked out the exchange a bit, I thought I'd put the question to you all and see what might be available from the custom knife makers you are familiar with.

The ideal knife probably has a blade slightly less than three inches long, with an overall length between 5 1/2 and 6 1/4 inches.

My price range goes up to about $150, and I'm partial to sambar stag scales, horn scales, and perhaps some woods, for this kind of knife.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It's tough to buy a knife to fit a sheath. It's a little backwards, though I understand your predicament.

Not really difficult, as the range of knives that could fit is not all that limited. My Swamp Rat Swamp Warden ( http://www.shop.ratknives.com/images/RatWardenAll.jpg ) fits nicely inside it, as do several of my other knives. It's just such a good sheath that I'd like to find a custom that I can dedicate to it.

At the same time, I don't want to break they bank, so I've set a $150 upper limit on a knife, which may be a bit unrealistic. In any case, if you know of a custom knife maker who you'd recommend and that makes simple, elegant fixed blades that aren't too pricey, please let me know. :)

I can't speak specifically to that sheath, but when I make them, there is a welt inside that is cut to fit the esge of the blade, especially up around the choil. The reason for that is to help hold the knife in. So blade size and profile shape plays a role in fitting the knife to sheath.

It seems to me you might consider going to a knife shop, if one is around, where you can try the knives that interest you, seeing how they fit in the sheath.

This is a generic, I suppose, "custom" sheath I got on eBay. Considering it's generic, it's not bad at all. Having put several knives in and out of it, my tolerance for looseness of a knife inside it is pretty generous. In other words, I'm not picky about the fit, just that the knife will go in easily enough and not rattle around in there. Based on the knives I've put in and out of it, most fixed blades that I've seen on Gene Ingram's website would be fine, so, really what I'm looking for are perhaps the names of some knife makers that forum members have worked with and are happy with the results, and someone whose knives aren't too pricey. I'm not looking for a safe queen, but one that I'll use. However, I want a custom... maybe it already exists, maybe someone has one they'd like to sell. You know how it is, the knife doesn't need to be made for me, but if it's custom quality but not coming from a production maker, that'd be great.

Heck, I could make one from a file or from some cold rolled steel, but I'd prefer getting one from an actual custom maker. Make any sense?

BTW, don't know of any good knife stores around here.

John Greco has some of his stuff on Ebay last I checked. Definitely some value fixed blades to be had there.

Glad I could help. Wait until you talk with Eddie, he's a very down to earth guy and will build it like YOU want.:)
