Looking for a perfect knife

Okay. I love knives. I do. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to support my interests most often because I am a newer college student (and am trying to pay my semesters up front). Thing is, I've been saving for school more than anything else ever since I could legally work. Point is that I often don't have a lot of money at a time. Because of this, I have never really had a good knife. I mean, I've had knives that last me a while, but just don't meet my needs.

It seems all the knives I have just never meet my basic requirements: they should work like a tool should, and for me, I like some "throwability".

The best knife I've had for this so far was a $20 winchester bowie (the handle of which has broken off in less than a year's use) - It throws, and it can chop wood (well it could with a handle).

I basically want a knife that is as follows: has good edge retention, easy sharpenability, lower anti-corrosion maintenance, and of course, throwability. I really like knives with a somewhat bowie-like profile, but I also have no objections to any double edge. I also like simple design.

If anyone has a knife come to mind that fits this criteria (and hopefully costs less than $100), please let me know.

edge retention, lower anti-corrosion maintenance and throwability go against each other...
Throwing knives have to be soft so they won't break easily, good edge retention needs reasonable hardness, and steels with lot of chromium offer low anti-corrosion maintenance but it also make them more brittle.

I would recommend you something from Ranger Knives. Normal (5160) RD series are very tough (.25" thickness), can be easily sharpened, they are coated so lower maintenance is fulfilled and are around $100.

Or if you want something really TOUGH, ask Justin (owner of Ranger Knives) to made you one from S7 steel ( http://knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/770720/ )

I definitely like the looks of the ranger knives - especially those RD's. Does anybody own one?

In addition to Rangers, look at Ontario RATs and Beckers.

All three brands are respected for the price and within your pricerange.

I know that you often get what you pay for - does anyone know anything about kershaw's military boot knife? And does anybody know about knives made by gun manufacturers? Specifically Smith & Wesson and their H.R.T. knives?

Swamp Rat Knife Works may be the answer.
They are a sister company to the legendary Busse Combat.
I am a college student myself, and I have caught the Busse Bug!
SRKW uses the same facilities as Busse Combat, only at night and on the weekends. It is also owned by the wife of the owner of Busse. (Jerry Busse)
Rats are GREAT knives at GREAT Prices!! They rival the Busse knives in performance, but are priced MUCH lower. Also the best part about them is they offer a 100% Unconditional Lifetime Guarantee. Meaning if you ever possibly manage to hurt the knife (near impossible without actually trying) then they replace it, No Questions asked. It's true!
There's a review someone did on the web, (may have been Cliff Stamp. not sure though) but they used a Rat knife and chopped the steel hinges off of an old truck!

Burnse, the Kershaw Military Boot knife will not have the throwability you want. The tip is just simply too thin, and would break on the first less-than-true throw. As for knives made by gun manufacturers, they are usually sub-par, and what you are paying for is the name. They usually do not live up to the standards that you would expect. Hope this helps... If you want a more "natural" looking knife that'll be tough as nails, try one of the Himalayan Imports knives...

Here's an alternative point-of-view from an owner of six Busse or SR knives: Rats appear to only be for sale on the secondary market, where they sell for a premium over MSRP. That makes the Rat's you can buy relatively expensive.

Blackjack knives are awesome blades. They are some of the sharpest blades you can get.The quality is great and regarding the 'Grunt' everything about the knife is spot on,the grip is one of the best you will ever find.

I was looking at the grunt, the blackmoor dirk (tip to thin to throw?), and the anacondaII. If there is enough positive feedback, I may just buy them all. I guess there is no "one perfect knife", but I suppose one is never enough is it? I might as well go all out.
