Looking for a quality sodbuster with a slightly longer handle than that of the GEC Bullnose

Hi all,

I love the GEC Bullnose, but sometimes wish the handle—more specifically, the curved portion of the handle which spans the distance of the butt end to the point at which the underside of the handle flattens our near the blade—were even a centimetre/0.4” longer.

Any recommendations? I will be trying a Bullbuster—but what are some in-between sizes soddies to look out for?

I’m good with 1095, D2 or any other good tool or stainless steel. As with the Bullnose, I prefer a strong pull, good build quality, and nice handle material—Micarta is great, but I’m down with G2, some wood, maybe even Delrin. Drop points and spear points are preferred to clip points of others. And it’s gotta have a half-stop.

I am aware of the Maserin Plow (looks like it might be what I’m after), but sadly, Collector Knives doesn’t ship to Canada/internationally. :(

Many thanks for your recommendations.

The Northwoods Madison Barlow is right between the 71 and 21. It has a drop point blade.

I normally prefer the simplicity of a shadow pattern over a bolsters -- but that is a very attractive knife, and the size looks excellent. (Though they look to be selling for a pretty penny these days -- yikes!) Thanks kindly for the recommendation.

The A.G. Russell "Cowboy" is 4 3/8" closed.
Stainless blade. Worth a look. Very affordable.
I have the "rancher" which is its smaller cousin. Solid knife. Made for real work. Don't let the made in China sway you.

Edit- this one's missing the halfstop.

Moki Fish Owl 110 has a "sodbuster" style look, and it comes in at 4" handle length.

Edit: doesn't have your desired half-stop (it is a lock back).

Well the drop point Buck 110 is a lot like a sodbuster, but of course it's a lockback and there's no half stop.

Thanks, I remember coming across that one, but being put off by the lack of half stop. Not that I’ve handled many without one—my preference is based on fairly limited experience—though a solid half-stop just feels “right” to me.

I have indeed heard good things about the quality of A.G. Russell’s sodbusters, and even their 8Cr13MoV. May still check it out some day.

Cheers

Thanks, that’s a very attractively shaped knife. I don’t know what it is with me—some kind of weird hangup in that when I see a nail nick, I expect a slipjoint, and the presence of even a more “traditional” lock like a back lock kind of throws me off.

Totally irrational, I know. I take a small measure of comfort in having read similar sentiments expressed here or on another knife forum. :D

The 110 is a classic knife, that’s for sure, and having a similarly styled no-name version (though with a clip point), I can appreciate the very neutral, curved handle shape. (The one I have belonged to my dad; it’s special to me for that reason, and I plan to keep it, but don’t use it much as the overall style just doesn’t do it for me).

Cheers

Did you not know that the drop point 110 doesn't have a nail nick ?
I can understand your feelings in this department for sure though.
Personally it doesn't bother me, but I do definitely love when the nick is omitted on a lockback that doesn't need it.

It's not that common that they do this, but with the naturally light pull they have and with many being pinchable it's not always needed.
Now Gerber really has something special in their LST line, they've omitted the unnecessary nail nick and they even happen to have a half stop.

Whoops -- guess I hadn't looked closely enough at the drop point 110 to notice that. Thanks.

That LST looks like a no-nonsense, fully utilitarian knife. Interesting -- I've never seen a half stop on a back lock.

Isn't the GEC 21 Bull Buster the Giant Sodbuster you're looking for?

Could be a bit too giant mind :D:cool:
