I am in the market for something for an EDC that I can also carry when I am dressed up. I was thinking a CRK sebenza with damascus or a gold class Benchmade, any others I should consider. I love the way damascus looks but I have no experience with it, how does it compare to something like S35V? I'd like to Keep it at $750 or less.

Sebenza is always a safe bet. I personally wouldn't suggest Benchmade gold class unless you are just a die hard Benchmade fanatic or love a particular knife they make. I say this as a Benchmade fan myself but I feel the fit, finish and QC is not up to snuff on the Gold class for the price. There are quite a few nice options out there, William Henry is another example...

Are you open to ordering from a custom maker? Greg Lightfoot can make you something very handsome with damascus for around that price.

Thanks for the suggestions, yes I am open to custom makers. What's everyones take on Damascus, pros cons?

Those carbon fiber Sebenzas sure look good. I bet they'd look great if you're dressed up. Great when you aren't as well :)

That is a fine Sebenza, the seller is an authorized CRK dealer. There are others there as well.
Google Devin Thomas Damascus and you'll get the info you need on the steel. He does the CRK knives. It is a stainless Damascus, so the care for it is easy. I have 2 CRKs with it and love them.

I also went this way (small 21 with cocobolo inlays);

Can't wait to pick it up!!!

Another vote for William Henry - They're a piece of fine jewelry disguised as a knife. (but very functional, with an exquisite fit and finish)

Any particular style? I love Todd davisons ebony wood slip joint I just picked up. Elegant yet useful.

You should check out Alan Davis right here on the forums. Elegant, well made and functional. I have a gorgeous, but very usable dress up knife from him I would never part with. Russ

some of Mcusta's offerings are rather elegant looking and in my experience very well made users that wont set you back as much $$$

If you're looking for elegant, Damascus is a great choice... not all Damascus is created equal, and I'd recommend something from a reputable maker like Chad Nichols or Devin Thomas. A Damascus Sebenza (Devin Thomas) is a great choice if you're going production, as is the CRK Mnandi in Damascus if you want something smaller and more traditional looking. DDR is who I'd recommend using for a custom Damascus piece (Chad Nichols). I got my Gunhammer from him and he has other styles if that isn't your cup of tea.

As far as the usefulness of the blade vs typical high end steels, they require more upkeep and protectant as they are prone to rust and corrosion. But a little tuffglide applied after each use or once a month if the knife is a safe queen will keep it spotless.

I have a couple of Damascus blades that get moderately used and have had no problems.
