Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a knife a lot like the Ka-bar USMC Straight Edge Knife. I like the look and feel of the knife but i am concerned about the tang. A few friends had them, issued by the sheriff's office. and the tangs broke when they where using the knife to split wood, using another piece of wood as the hammer.

Anyways here is what i need in the knife,
-no serration in the blade.
-blade 6.5" to 7.5" long.
Would prefer for it to be coated like the ka-bar knife (black is a good color for me) however its not required.
-used for search and rescue so it has be able to support some pretty serious abuse all around
-budget is like 150-200 max
-Has to be fixed, (don't know why it wouldn't at that length)
-The blade width needs be between 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" if its too wide it gets in my way when i'm using it.

Thanks for the help

yeah, the width is a bit too much though. I updated first post with width requirement. thanks for the fast response

Cold steel makes some very tough knives that might fit your criteria. They also make the Ka-Bar in a D2 steel which may be more durable than the standard.

I, like most here have had to make a similar decision. I decided to go with the Hogue EX-F01. It's got a blade that is 7" long, with a convex edge, and the black KG coating you're wanting. This knife is a well built knife, and is very ergonomic. It feels great in the hand, and it's a good looking knife. Elishewitz designed it, and there is a good youtube video of him explaining the design.

Worth looking into for sure, but I haven't given it a real test yet. Sharp as hell out of the box too.

Just a thought,

I'm not quite sure what the width is for a BK7, but other than that possible issue, it fits your requirements to a "T".

Also, not sure if you know this, but the Kraton handled F/U has a slightly thicker tang than the leather handled version if that helps you at all, so it might be a bit more sturdy.

Get in touch with John of JK Knives, if you can draw what you want he can make it for you. Most of his work is within your price range but I don't know if he offers any type of coatings.

RAT 7. Also fits your bill great. 7" blade with 6.5" cutting surface, finger choil, 1095 steel, black coating and micarta scales. All for under $90.00. Hard to beat!

+1 for ESEE-6--I LOVE ESEE KNIVES! I have the 6, 4, 3, and Izula II, and they're all a cut above.
