Hello guys I have been lurking for a few weeks and thought it was time to say hello. I have this used MTech knife that I have been back right pocket carrying for a while and it is still in excellent condition (except the one missing screw at the back end of the handles visible in the second picture). It must use some sort of ball bearing design possibly the IKBS design cause it opens like butter. I am now looking for $100 replacement for this knife something that is high quality without breaking the bank. My requirements are as follows.....

In no particular order but all equally important

It must have either a reversible clip or be setup to carry the same orientation as this one in my back right pocket

It must be as smooth (i.e. IKBS or some sort of ball bearing design)

It needs to be approximately the same size as this knife which is (OA=8", Handle Length = 4.5" Blade Length (Sharpened/UnSharpened) = 3"/3.25")

Please help me find my new knife..... Oh and it must have the nice finger flipper pieces seen in the pics that also work as a handguard of sorts.

Thanx for the suggestions so far guys keep em coming....

timberweasel I already have a ripple unfortunately its the walmart liner lock version but I do like it my only issue is I dont like when liner locks on slide a small amount under the blade not the full way if you know what i mean this little mtech locked up beyond well. How does the frame lock work in this matter I am familiar with its concept and have a gerber mini paraframe that uses the same kind of frame lock but how well does it lock up on the Real Ripple we will call it for this conversation?

could anyone identify a model of this mtech also? It has really impressed me over the time i have carried it.

You need a Zero Tolerance 350. It has a flipper, 3.25" blade (made out of S30V), and the clip can be placed in four different positions. It's a bit above your $100.- limit, at around $140, but is well worth it and it has all of the features you're looking for.

(...) but how well does it lock up on the Real Ripple we will call it for this conversation?

The frame-lock on my Ripple is fully engaged and covers 50% of the tang: solid with no play. Although the scales are quite thin, it isn't a knife to be thrashing on so I have no concerns with it failing.

ETA: But since you have a version of the Ripple already, perhaps you ought to look into the Forum edition Kershaw Skyline... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...w-Skyline-PREORDER-Thread-S30V-Blue-G10-90-ea

Thx again guys I do like the look and beefiness of the ZT350 although just to clarify I wasn't necessarily looking for an assisted open more of a very very smooth opener with the index finger flipper.

add a little bit more and get a tank..
the ZT 350..

ooops scratch that..i just barely read your last post..sorry sir..

manix 2 is a great knife. you could also get a waved endura if you like the feature on the old one.

I'll recommend the Kershaw Junkyard dog. I have the 2.2 an it's a good working knife. Mine rides with me every day. Not the smoothest flipper I've ever had but it's a good stout knife. If you really want to drool over a big flipper, check out the Fox Deimos. THAT is the smoothest flipper I've ever owned. It's about double your price range though.

I'd wager that M-Tech knife doesn't have IKBS or any other ball-bearing system in it.

There are plenty of knives out there that operate smoothly without ball-bearings (though IKBS and KVT are both very nice). The flipper it has is common to a lot of ZT and Kershaw Knives (or the upcoming Spyderco Flipper). The Buck Vantage is also a flipper.

The other flipper you're referring to actually looks more like a wave-feature which is less of a guard and more of an opening mechanism. Columbia River makes a few knives with flippers on both sides that act as a "guard" when the knife is open, but most are honestly very uncomfortable when the knife is in the pocket (IMO).

You can take the SpeedSafe out and it works great with the flipper still. I actually like it better without the assist in. Feels more like a real knife if that makes sense.

Don't let the assisted opening be the only thing keeping you from the 350. Because its nice on it, but in no way necessary or superior in making it open.
