As the title says I am in the market for some type of sharpening solution however, I don't want to spend hundreds and I also don't want to get one of those fancy devices like the Wicked Edge or Lansky, nothing against them I just want to learn how to free hand sharpen. I have been looking into DMT stones they seem to be my best bet but I wanted some input before I went and bought it. Below are the items I'm considering, my only real requirements are that I want something that I can easily use to sharpen all my knives and I want to know exactly what I need, I'm not sure if I really need a strop with the DMT set or if its good to also have some ceramic rods for maintenance of blades that aren't very dull but have lost there fine edge. Things like that I don't know and would like some help on. Thanks for any input.

I got the credit card ones. I figured it would just make me better in the long run to deal with small stones 8). You can get polishing paper on amazon and glue it to the back of them. Then you could have 6 different grits and it would still fit in your pocket. I hear people on here saying that stuff is great for stropping.
