Looking for a simple fixed blade.

I'm looking for a small-ish fixed blade of around maybe 7" OAL, blade stock of 1/16" to 1/8" (at most), wide-ish drop point, fully flat ground blade (preferably convexed edge) with pinned synthetic scales, G-10 or Micarta preferably.

Not too picky about the blade steel, but a tougher carbon steel at around RC 60 or so would be good.

Does anything come near that, or should I go custom? If so, who makes something similar?

I'm considered building my own, but materials aren't as easily available here.

i would suggest Bark River, have just what you want and customer service is second to none  :)

Take a look at some Bark Rivers. I have a Mountaineer and its a beautiful small drop point that packs a lot of utility. It's 12C27, but most of their knives are made out of A2. The edges are convex ground.

Micarta and G-10 are available as handle options.

I've taken a look at them (am still looking through them now), and I expect I'll be picking up a couple shortly. I'm looking for a blade profile with a lower point, though, like the leaf profile.

How would a thicker fully convex ground blade compare in cutting ability (push cutting) to a thinner fully flat ground blade (w/ convexed edge)?

You'll be surprised at how good those Bark River thicker convexed knives cut. They work particularly well on flesh IMO. I have a Marbles Hunter from when Mike Stewart worked there before starting BR CO. and I have grown quite fond of the way it works for field dressing and skinning tasks. It is a 1/4" thick at its thickest point and tapers to 7/32 and then down to 3/16 toward the tip. You would never think it would cut as good and as effortlessly as it does but the proof is in the pudding as the old saying goes.

I might have a small custom very similar to what you described. Shot me an email if you want to see a pic: silveredge007@cox.net

Thanks,

The mini northstar sounds like what you want. From Bark River. The big Northstar is very good too.
