Hello all, I have a slip joint, a Buck 379, and its the about the perfect size for a small slip. The problem is its kind of junk. I'm looking fora nicer quality knife about the same size. Any thoughts?

The 379 is Buck's China produced Canoe pattern, not a bad knife generally...to give a good recommendation (one that might actually help you) we would need more detail.
Size of the knife overall?
Preference on steel? (1095 or stainless)
Handle material preference?
Use of the knife? (just pocket EDC? Food prep? etc)

Best,
Russel

Buck's American Made knives are built like tanks. They aren't the prettiest and the most well finished, but they are tough knives. They are all stainless.... as far as I know.

Case makes a good knife, but I like to inspect before I buy.... I'll order one, but I'll want to be able to send it back. I'd buy one used from a member here that would tell you about the fit and finish. I don't care for the Stainless ones... give me the CV ones.

Queen Knives - I've have one. It's a great knife. I'm not a big fan of their steel.... not that it's a bad steel. It just doesn't patina well.... which is really a good thing as it's resistant. I've just gotten where I like knives to age. :o I'd own more if they'd do more 1095 or something similar. Their Schatt and Morgan Heritage series look sweet and would fit the bill for me.

Great Eastern Cutlery [GEC (Stainless), Tidioute (1095 Carbon), Northfield (1095 Carbon)], makes great knives in cool classic patterns that many of the traditional cutlers seem to have forgotten. I've had a few of these and they are mostly well done (I did send one back the other day for some minor tweaks). This company makes knives like I like.... classic, traditional, carbon steel.

price range you're looking for?
do you want to stick with a 3" closed single blade?
does it need to be a clip point like the Buck?

I prefer single blade. And it has to be very pocketable like the 379. I would use it for very minor cutting tasks like tags envelopes and fruit. Price range around 100.

most of the big brands have been mentioned by others, so maybe I'll throw out some more specific suggestions: the GEC Boy's knife, #15 is around 3 inches closed and available in a single blade, clip or spear. Very simple, no frills pattern. the #55 Hound's tooth is a similar size, wharncliffe or spear, some with linerlock. The #48 is a single blade slimline trapper, not produced for a while, so less variety in handles etc.

Canal St Cutlery's half moon trapper might also fit the bill.

all of these are well under your price range, but they are still excellent quality.

finding a sub 3" single blade slipjoint is going to be tough.
on the sub 3" 2-blade options, there are the Northfield #26 little carver, GEC Pemberton, and Case peanut.

edit to add -- I had spaced off the GEC Boy's Knife.

GEC 25s are 3 inchers I believe. The Pemberton is less.

GEC Canoes are 3.5" but are very pocketable.... great blade combo too.

also available with a spear blade.

A couple of Case singlers - sowbelly and wharncliffe mini trapper:
