Looking for a slipjoint

Something has come over me. I don't understand what's going on. Ever since I was 10, I've been carrying locking folders. I haven't had a slipjoint since I got a swiss army knock off when I was 7(ish.)
Now, I feel my self compelled to carry them again, but better than a chinese swiss. I have given in and decided to buy one, but which? Swiss? Case? Opinel? Laguiole? I saw an Opinel at my competitor's store yesterday, but it seemed too large. Pitty, seeing as they let them go VERY cheap.
Give me some insight, please.

I have a Queen large Toothpick that I like very much. I do not know what compelled me to order this since I am typically a locking folder type of guy. It is a great knife. Long, slender, and slices great.

I suggest the Victorinox soldier which ranges in price from $15-$20. It has a large blade, awl, can opener, bottle opener, and screwdrivers all in a compact durable package. The aluminum handled Swiss Army knives are nearly indestructible and the Victorinox models are of excellent quality.

For the price it's difficult to beat the price of a Opinel or a Victorinox. But for a few $$ more I go with Stevekt recommendation of the Queen D2 Large toothpick. Ordered one myself for an upcoming trip to San Antonio pretty sweet blade been carrying it around until my custom Buck 110 arrives. I've got admit I'm loving my return to old style knife collecting.

I, too, would choose one from Queen Cutlery. It appears all of their blades are in D2 (which I like). They also have ones with 2 blades in one knife if you want, though I'm partial to single-blade knives (like the previously suggested Toothpick).

If anybody reading this thread actually owns one, I'd like to know what the blade thickness is.

If it's a traditional style your looking for I'd recommend one from Queen Cutlery or AG Russell.

Otherwise Victorinox makes the best slipjoints.

Queen seems to be the name on this one. But still, I don't know if I'm looking to spend so much on a knife that may just be a personal fad. Now I'm thinking of an Opinel/Vic combo. What is the most carried SAK here?

Anything from queen is good...their Cobo series is my favorite, and I would recommend a Canoe or Large Stockman any day of the year.

Alternately, Victorinox makes some very well-priced knives. As someone pointed out, the soldier is a great deal, got mine for about 18$ shipped off ebay.

I say go for a little style, and pizazz. I bought a Le Thiers for myself, and love it. There are a lot of great-looking slip joints from across the ocean.

I have a Swiss Army Officer that my brother gave me about 10-12 years ago. It's still made under the model "Mechanic". The one thing I will say is that the #2 Philips screwdriver has a PERFECT tip (as good as a Craftsman screwdriver), its placement lets you really use the handle on tight screws. The pliers on it have proven useful, too. I'm a computer geek for a living and its saved me a lot of trips for a toolbox.

A quality product.

I now EDC a victorinox soldier (whilst awaiting delivery of a special knife....). Plus in my office environment workplace, nobody bats an eyelid. I remember their faces when I EDC-ed my Emerson, lol.

The backspring is stronger than that of the red handled models.

There's a good bargain somewhere around for Queen slipjoints...I think I may just order one....

Like I've said many times, I still prefer the traditional slipjoint patterns. But if you need scissors/screwdrivers, et cetera, then a SAK is the way to go. Me, I EDC a stockman and a Clip-it, so I get the best of both worlds. And if I need to do something nasty like scrape a battery terminal, I can use the blade on the Leatherman for that, thereby preserving the edges on the stockman.

Try a Case in chrome vanadium. They have yellow handles and are usually between 25-45$. You can find them in hardware stores and there is often more than one of each model so you can pick the best fit and finish.

Last night I had a dream about an Opinel Pruning blade, and a Vic mini-champ.
So I guess that's what I'm gonna be buying!

lots of people are hard on case, citing bad QC etc. i've never had a problem, nor have i ever seen a case knife that did not excel in fit, finish, and performance.

the chrome vanadium steel is awesome, and it can also be had in other handle materials if you look around - it's just that all the yellow-handled ones have it.

peace.

Please be sure to check out the Queens and S&M's at www.cumberlandknifeworks.com. I have a small stockman with D2 blades and abalone scales. Love it! Will probably be getting something with cocobolo handles in the relatively near future.

The others suggested so far are good but just not in the same league in terms of combined fit/finish/materials/design, IMHO.

But for $10, I say go ahead and get an Opinel, too.
