Looking for a small 2 blade slipjoint

My first post!

Excuse me if there's something wrong with my English, I come from Sweden.

Anyway, I'm getting kinda tired of all G-10/titanium tactical folders and feel that it's time to get a nice classic slipjoint. What I'm looking for is:

2 blades (preferably placed at opposite sides, but not a must)
About 3" closed length (Could be a little smaller if necessary)
Natural handle material
High quality blade steel (440C or better)

I can spend maybe a little over $100 at most.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Some patterns that come to mind:
Peanuts often have two blades, but usually on the same end.
Muscrat knives have two identical blades, one on each end.
Stockman knives generally have three blades, but some have two.
Senator pen knives have blades on opposite ends.

As far as brands, I'd look at Case, Queen, Schatt and Morgan, AG Russell, Hen and Rooster, Boker, and Canal Street Cutlery.

Your main hurdle is going to be finding a knife that's available in Sweden, or a dealer that will ship there.

Happy shopping,
-Bob

Thanks guys. All suggestions are of course beautiful.

The problem is the blade steels. Pretty much all nice looking knives I find are 420 which I've only had bad experiences with. The dream would be something with maybe D2, VG10 or S30V.

Huh?!?

Canal Street Cutlery has the Ring Opener in A2 steel.
AG Russell uses ATS34, 440C, VG10, and other higher grade steel on many of their products.
Schatt and Morgan uses D2, ATS-34, and perhaps others.
Queen has some knives in BG42 and D2.
Boker uses 440C, 1095 carbon steel, BG42, and others.

I find the 420hc used by Case will do anything the knife is capable of doing.

Yes, but I just can't seem to find one that fits my other wishes. Maybe it's just me being crappy at the fine art of googling.

And perhaps I'm just being too picky about the steel, like hwp says? I mean, the Case Genuine Stag Baby Butterbean and Peanut sure looks nice aside from that.

thOm, welcome to the forums!

Its always nice to have another fan of the old slippys on board. If you are having a hard time finding what you're looking for, may I suggest trying E-bay for older knives?

Sometimes an old knife will come up for not too outragous a price, and a genuine old knife can still have some good years of service left. Not to mention someone else did all the hard work of many years putting on a genuine pocket worn patina.

I think Boker still has a classic line of pen knives in assorted bone, stag, and rosewood handles, but they are a wee bit smaller than you want. Mostly 2 3/4 or 7/8 inches. Boker uses 440C last I heard, and carbon steel.

I have a Case peanut in bone stag with the True Sharp stainless steel, and it works out fine to get me throuth the day. But I believe you can also get the case peanut in amber bone with CV carbon steel.

And your English is just fine.

Welcome!

Actually, it can be hard to find small knives (3" closed and less) in fancy steels. Most of these knives are meant for light use, where leading-edge performance isn't critical. I'm talking about pen knives, Senators, Tuxedos, etc.

That said, AG Russell has an Ultimate Pen Knife in VG10, available with fancier handle materials, but it's a single blade knife.

RE: jackknife: Unfortunately, it appears Case dropped the Amber Bone Peanut in CV as of this year. If I could find one I'd snap it up...

Good luck,

-- Sam

CURSES!

I was actually thinking of making that my next knife purchase. I'd seen it in a Smoky Mountain Knifeworks catalogue and liked it. I guess its true what they say about he who hesitates! DA-YAM!!

Thanks everyone.

It seems no one makes the knife i want. :p

Maybe a custom is the way to go?
Could someone give me a rough estimate what a custom 2 7/8" peanut with sambar stag and S30V blades might cost? I just want to know if it's worth even considering so it can be very rough.

-About 3.5 inches.

I'm sorry, but that's just too big. I should have written "2 1/2"-3" closed length" instead, because that's more what I'm after. I know I'm getting extremely picky now, but I intended this to be a real keeper so I want it to be close to perfect.

Depending on what you want to spend I can highly recommend the little take apart knife by BullDog. I got one of these a good while back and have to admit that its a quality piece of work. The blades are superb, the size is wonderful and it has that great snap I like to see and to each of the two blades. The 440C blades hold a pretty good edge to them also. This is really well built slip joint in my opinion especially when you consider that it is engineered to take apart to clean after field dressing or some other dirty task. I was shocked at the quality but then again it is made in Germany as I recall.

Edit: Here are pictures of it for your reference. I think I paid plus or minus $50 for this one. I no longer have record of it. With both blades open it measures 6 and just shy of 5/8"

I note that it does not have Germany typed on it anywhere. In fact all it says is Bull Dog Brand so don't hold me to the Germany thing. It must be that I read it somewhere if that is it. I know other BullDogs are made there.

Maybe a custom is the way to go?

Being picky is not a problem when wanting to find "the knife" as a lot of people here have been or are currently wearing similar shows. I know it took me awhile to find mine. My quest finally ended with a custom from Joel Chamblin. It wasn't cheap but I was finally satisfied with the particular pattern I was searching for. Assuming you don't find what you're searching for, you may want to contact Al Warren: http://www.warrenknives.com/

He's no stranger to S30V when it comes to Slip Joint knives and his prices are reasonable for a custom. He makes a solid knife according to many here. I have no affiliation with Mr. Warren... I just know he works with S30V in his knives

And yes, your English is great! Good luck in your search! :D
