Looking for a small fixed blade.

There is a sub class of knives that I've heard called "Pocket Fixed Blades". I really like the look of some of them. The small Graham Razel, and TOPS knives Sparrow Hawke are both under consideration. But, I don't want to miss anything! If anyone has any suggestions, it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Check out Bark River Knife & Tool. They have 3 that are in the line of what you are looking at.

Did someone say Razel? The perfect fixed blade pocket edc. Very practical.

All of us who EDC have to be mindful of the maze of knife laws in our daily travels, so be aware of the blade lengths of the knives you are looking at. Agressive "tactical" looking knives are no more evil than the user to whom they belong, but they may not be perceived that way by an officer, the public at large, or a judge. I am a traditional kinda guy anyways, but my suggestion is a Schrade Old Timer 152OT Sharpfinger. It has a 3 1/2" blade, so that might rule it out for you. It has traditional brown delrin handles, a thong hole, and if you want, can be customized for a shorter, slimmer profile, and fitted with a kydex neck sheath for peanuts. IMHO, they are one of the best bargains, dollar for dollar out there.

Schrade was forced out of business in July of 2004, so they are discontinued, but there is still a plentiful supply out there for less than $30 NOS. And with a bit of research, you can get them in your choice of 1095HC carbon steel, or 400 series stainless. Just be aware that the new owner of the trademarks is having them made by the chinee now, if that matters to you like it does to me and many others.

Wow, those pieces by Charles May are impressive. Simple, clean work. I find the more knives I collect and work with, the more I appreciate well done basics.

Codger, YEA, I remember the Sharpfinger . . . . I'll look around for one, I'm sure I can find one.

Bark River, here I come!

Found a USA made Sharpfinger. It is bigger then I'm looking for, but I remember seeing that design YEARS ago and I liked it a lot then, I like it a lot now. Cheap, and I wanted to get a USA made one before they were gone.

Still open to suggestions for really small stuff!

I took a Sharpfinger blank, shortened the blade, increased the sweep, shortened the handle changing it to maple, and added thumb grooves on the spine ahead of the handle. I call it my "Middlefinger".:D

For a blade small enough to truly *FIT* in a pocket, I recommend you look among the neck knife models available, since their M.O. requires relatively thin profiles and small enough dimensions to be unobtrusive. Otherwise, there are a few pocket-specific fixed blades out there. Beyond that, pick your favorite folder..... Or get a BIG pocket. ;)

Among the Busse/Swamp Rat stable, check out the Assault Shaker from Busse or the Rat Shaker from Swamp Rat. They are only available on the secondary market, but do show up in the For Sale forum occasionally. You'll want to replace their kydex sheath with some leather pants, rough side out for pocket carry. Adding a lanyard fob is another add-on that I've found handy.

If you aren't shy about customs, a few folks whose very small blades I've noticed in the past are Virginia Custom Cutlery's Stinger model necker, Bill Siegle skeleton neck knives, David Winston, Gene Ingram, Ivan Campos, J Nielson, Jens Anso, Kathleen Tomey, Robert Hankins' Spare Change model, or RW Clark's Woodsprite model. My apologies to the many other custom maker's whose small blades have slipped my mind at the moment.

From AG Russell's offerings the Hunter's Scalpel, Woods Walker, Bird & Trout, or possibly Deer Hunter models might be able to take care of your pocket knife requirements.

Here are some specs on my new Charlie May Lil` BladieMae

Full Length 6 9/16
Blade Length 2 15/16
Blade Material 1/8

It fit in my front pocket, just fine. :D

Hey Myakka, great little knife...I am seriously considering Scandi..what sort of handle material you have on yours? Thanks.

Hey Rokjok, thanks for the list. Just what I need Research material! cool! One of my dream knives is a Busse Pepper Shaker, unfortunately, I found out about them after they were all gone. . . . sigh.

Myakka, great pics, that is a really nice little piece you got there, you lucky dog.

I'm surprised no one has recommended Dozier. I bought one from Dozier directly that came back from the Blade Show a year and a half ago, one from AG Russell and one from BladeArt. They're all very nice knives. My Arkansas Traveler came with a horizontal sheath, but I routinely slip it into my pocket instead -- easily carried.
