Looking for a small Khukri.

Hopefully you guys won't think I am too much of a wimp, but I am looking at getting a Khukri that I could wear on the streets of a city without scaring the common folk too much. I would prefer a blade around 6" give or take. I know from lurking on this forum for the last while that this is probably considered a bit of a toy, but if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A 12" Sirupati is a decent belt knife, but it's still liable to frighten the sheep. You may want to send Uncle Bill an email when he gets back, he just might have something suitable for you.

I think my 9" Chesapeake Bay Knife Club styled one comes in with a 5.5" blade. I don't think they sell many so you may either be in luck and help Uncle get rid of one or have the bad luck to have to order and wait till one is made for you.

If you want more info/comments on any of the blades below,
do a forum search the the name of the blade.
Add the size (i.e. 12) if more than one size is available.

You may want to look into an alternate sheath for daily city carry.

At the following thread the one in the middle is likely still available.

I bought the one on the top and found the handle pretty comfortable.
(I'm average size.) If you don't want to carry a blade
that looks like a collectors item, you could easily
reshape the handle with sandpaper to make it more like a
modern fingergrip style.
Someone noted that this is a similar style blade to the
Chesapeake Bay Knife Club special edition (no longer available).

Kagnes Katne 6" total length
It's a pretty impressive little blade.
The size of a fat fountain pen in a shirt pocket,
and virtually invisible in a jacket pocket.
At least one military person has mentioned
wearing this as a neck knife.
I blunted the blade up to the bend and use one
in the kitchen as a paring/utility knife.
And if anyone sees it you can believably and
correctly label it a letter opener.
And it doesn't look as "serious" as a larger blade.
And for the $10 price you can afford to experiment.
This one is officially a "paper cutter",
but HI makes it as a utility blade (usually).
Make sure you ask for a steel blade when you order.
If currently out of stock you shouldn't have too long
a wait for another shipment.

Thanks again for help.

It's all true except for one thing. You CAN'T anticipate the kamis, as Bill's aching head can tell you. Bill may not get a 9"er in a year or one may come in the next shipment that arrives.

Keith,
Though I haven't had it long, I've become very attached to my 12" Sirupati. IMHO you couldn't ask for a better small khukri. It's compact, carries well on the belt, but still big enough to hack "wait a minute" vines or chop saplings for improvised litter poles. I don't know if a smaller khukri would retain that kind of versatility.
I'm a firm believer that the best knife of all is the one you have on you when you desperately need to cut something. From that perspective my Kagas Katne is my "survival knife", since it stays with me 24/7.

Keith I would almost trade you any 3 of my khuks for an Ed Fowler's pronghorn you got in your avatar.:D

:D

Loved Ed's book, "Knife Talk". Straight-talking, no BS guy thats all too rare where I work. And his knives are probably worth whatever you have to pay for them.

I have a couple of old (50 year plus) that I might sell. Neither are decorator wall hangers.

One is 7 inches overall and made for a WWII soldier. It has a soapstone and ivory grip. $60 incl ship

The other is older and more like a very good village khuk. About 9.5 inchs long

If you have an interest, email me. I can send you pictures.

Oooops, did I just break a "for sale" rule?

Shhhhhhhhhhh

Bill

Bill, no breaking of the rules there. Was thinking of something new, with horn handles and maybe custom. Not sure at this point. Trying to gather as much info as possible.

Welcome to the cantina, Keith. I hope you can find what you're looking for. If you're willing to wait awhile, though, I've got a 10.5" OAL design on paper that I plan to make a wood model of soon, and I'd love to get a couple of them made. IMO, that's about the smallest a khuk can be and still be effective. I'm thinking of about a 3/8ths inch thickness, too, so it shouldn't be too heavy. :D

If you want anything smaller, you're best bet is to custom order a CBKC model, since they sound like good knives. :)

10.5" sounds just about perfect actually. When you have some pictures that you can email, would you please email them to me? Thanks.

If I ever get a chance to make a model, I'll try. I've been pretty busy lately, and all I've got so far is a sketch.
