I just ordered what seems to be an early model satin SOG Seal Pup, stamped Seki-Japan and includes the “groove” kydex sheath.

I’ve read that satin finished Seki seal pups were not sold in the US, making them somewhat rare. Is there any truth to this? Thanks in advance.

Do you have a photo of this knife? As far as I am aware, all Seal Pups made by Kinryu Seki up to 2006 were powder coated, including the ones that were sold in Japan and the Asian market. A Satin blade did not appear until the Taiwan production Elite. Your knife may have had the coating removed. Or, it may be an unheard of rare version. It's happened before.

Just received it. I’m guessing that the coating was removed.

Yup. The coating was removed. Hope you didn't pay a price as if this were some sort of rarity.

No, I paid the going rate. I like that the coating is removed. I used to carry one of these upside down on a load bearing vest and found the sheath/knife combo to be a winner. I’m glad to have one again.

I have one of the elites but I prefer the original due the sheath, thinner stock, and handle feel. Despite the big choil.

Good! I've had several seki versions and currently 2 elites and one regular. I EDC a satin plain edge elite in custom kydex regularly.

OK. Coating was removed, but I tend to agree that it looks pretty nice. The steel is Aus6 so I doubt you'll have much of a rust issue.
If really wanted to go crazy on it I suppose you could get it mirror polished. :)
